For Tracy Malone, this quote from Brigadier General Wilma L. Vaught says it all:

“To be successful, we must have courage, determination, and passion for what we do.”

Those three words, courage, determination, and passion, carry a lot of weight for women who have served. They speak to the willingness to step into unfamiliar territory, the determination to keep moving when the road gets difficult, and the passion that turns a job into something bigger: a commitment to serve.

Tracy’s selection of this quote gives us a glimpse into what she values about military service and the women who have helped shape its history. And choosing the words of Brigadier General Wilma L. Vaught, a trailblazer who spent her career opening doors and creating opportunities for women in uniform, makes the message even more meaningful.

Meet Tami Glenz! 🇺🇸

Some military careers begin with a lifelong calling. Others start with, “I’ll try this for a little while.” For Tami, it was the latter—and 25 years later, she had built an extraordinary Air Force career.

Tami started as an aircraft avionics technician, working on the radar, communications, and navigation systems that kept military aircraft mission-ready. From there, her career took her around the world and into senior enlisted leadership, ultimately serving as a Chief Master Sergeant responsible for logistics supporting the Air Force’s C-5 Galaxy fleet.

Her story includes some pivotal moments in military history—from the Gulf War to operations in the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Iraq. She was also on the Air Mobility Command ramp at Ramstein when the events of September 11, 2001, unfolded. It’s a day she says remains permanently etched in her memory.

But what we especially love about Tami’s story is that her service didn’t end with retirement. She went on to spend another 15 years in federal service and today continues to serve through mentorship, advocacy, and her work with the Military Women’s Memorial.

And service is truly a family tradition for Tami. All three of her adult children serve in the U.S. Air Force. ✈️

Tami is a powerful reminder that there is no single way to be a woman Veteran—and no single story that can define us. What connects us is that we raised our hands, answered the call, and served.

🇺🇸 Meet Suzanne McLaughlin: Continuing the Mission Beyond the Uniform

Suzanne McLaughlin’s military career gave her firsthand experience with some of the most critical elements of national defense. Today, she brings that experience to her work with Analytics Services (ANSER), where she serves as a Senior International Treaty and Agreements Policy Analyst supporting the Department of the Air Force Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategic Deterrence and Nuclear Integration (AF/A10).

AF/A10 is responsible for matters at the heart of America’s strategic deterrence mission, including nuclear deterrence and the integration of nuclear capabilities into Air Force operations and strategy. Suzanne’s work supporting international treaties and agreements contributes to the policy framework surrounding this vital national security mission.

Her perspective is uniquely informed by nearly 25 years in uniform, where she served as both a munitions officer and aircraft maintenance officer. She understands the responsibility, precision and accountability required when national security depends on getting the mission right.

Today, Suzanne continues that mission in a different capacity, bringing her military experience and expertise to the policy work supporting strategic deterrence.

Her story is another reminder that women serve, women lead, and women continue to make a difference long after their military careers end. 🇺🇸

Meet Sandra Lawrence 🇺🇸

When Sandra Lawrence joined the U.S. Navy in 1980, she had degrees in education and health education and no computer experience. The Navy commissioned her as a computer systems analyst, and that unexpected assignment launched a 25-year career in information systems, computer security, command networks, and command and control.

Sandra went on to lead computer operations for major Navy commands, including Naval Space Command, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, and Fifth Fleet. Just three days before Iraq invaded Kuwait, she took responsibility for U.S. Naval Forces Europe’s command and control system, helping keep personnel across the United Kingdom and Italy connected to operational plans and critical communications as the crisis unfolded.

Then came another first. From 1997 to 1999, Sandra served as the first Combat Systems Officer aboard USS Nimitz, where she established a brand-new department of 11 officers and 200 sailors. Her team kept everything from radar, satellites, communications, and computer networks to electronic warfare and shipboard self-defense systems operating around the clock.

Her Navy career took her through Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom before she retired in 2005.

But retirement didn't mean stepping away from service.

Since 2013, Sandra has volunteered with the Military Women's Memorial, leading tours, supporting Honor Flights, and helping develop the exhibit "A Sea Change: Women on Combatant Ships," honoring the history and milestone of women serving aboard combatant ships and aircraft.

Sandra's story is a great reminder that military service doesn't always follow the path you expect. Sometimes you take an opportunity, learn something completely new, and discover that it becomes the foundation for an extraordinary career.

We’re honored to introduce Sandra Lawrence and celebrate the 25 years she spent serving our nation, along with the many years she has continued serving the legacy of women Veterans. 🇺🇸
