I enjoyed the musical production of “Come from Away” at the Sandy Springs Arts Center last night. I continue to be disappointed about the fact that the Johns Creek Performing Arts bond referendum was rejected. I love the Sandy Springs Arts Center and the surrounding area and appreciate having the opportunity to enjoy the arts in a community-based theater. Not only was I moved by the musical production (the point of art!), but I also ran into people from the community that I know and we were able to connect by sharing our thoughts about the performance and meeting each other’s families - which makes communities stronger. I also kept thinking about all the opportunities the Sandy Springs Arts Center creates for people in the creative industry and the jobs it creates in supporting fields - like bartenders, security personnel, valet drivers, etc. And the economic ripple effect is obvious as attendees met for dinner and/or drinks before and/or after the show. It’s a shame that the conservative-leaning mindset and political messaging is that all new or increased public spending is wasteful instead of realizing or acknowledging that the arts can be an investment in community and economic growth. BTW - I also enjoy going to the Lawrenceville Arts Center.

In case you’re not aware, Georgia ranks 49th in the country in funding for the arts. Georgia’s per capita spend is $0.14. For comparison, our neighbor, Alabama, ranks 9th with a per capita spend of $3.11 and my home state of Minnesota ranks first with a per capita spend of $7.85. Georgia needs to do better and the arts should be accessible to all.

I attended the opening reception of the “Off the Beaten Path” exhibit last week and encourage you to check it out! It features ARTE GA member artist, Armando Chacon, who paints beautiful landscapes. The exhibit at the Limelight gallery goes through March 28 and is conveniently located at in Buckhead.

Congratulations to Dekalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, the Dekalb County Commissioners, and the rest of the Dekalb team on a FANTASTIC launch of the Dekalb Council for the Arts yesterday. At a time when national arts funding has been decreasing, the launch of a new arts council in the Atlanta metro area is indeed cause for a celebration.
