Damien Escobar, Kirk Whalum, and Peter White — and this one has an even better reason to go. The concert benefits The Family Health Centers of Georgia and supports pediatric health programs.

The American Legion Riders are holding their annual benefit for Wreaths Across America, helping support the mission of remembering and honoring our veterans. The ride also includes raffles, a 50/50 and food.

🐾 Douglas County Humane Society Paint Fundraiser

Painting with a Twist

Paint something fun and help local animals at the same time. Tickets are $39, with up to 50% of the proceeds benefiting the Douglas County Humane Society’s spay/neuter program and its work to reduce pet overpopulation and suffering.

We already included this one in our Live Music Weekly — but there is a wonderful reason to mention it again.

Sounds of Good Medicine is the annual fundraiser and community health awareness event for The Family Health Centers of Georgia. This year’s proceeds specifically support pediatric programs addressing behavioral health, asthma and childhood obesity. FHCGA provides healthcare to communities throughout our area regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.

So you can enjoy an evening of outstanding jazz AND help support healthcare for children and families who need it.

ADAMSON SQUARE — DOWNTOWN CARROLLTON

If you haven’t spent time wandering around Downtown Carrollton lately, Adamson Square is worth putting on your list.

The Amp at Adamson Square has become a real gathering place for live music and community events, and it is obvious people know it. Last Friday, I drove through early in the day before Michael Richardson’s band Natural Reflections concert and people had already claimed their spots with folding chairs.

That says a lot about how popular these free downtown concerts have become.

But Adamson Square is more than the music.

You can easily make a day of it downtown — browse the bookstores, stop in the vinyl shop, grab lunch at one of the delis or restaurants, wander through the local shops, and then settle in for an evening of live music.

There are a lot of interesting little places tucked around the square, and part of the fun is simply walking around and seeing what you discover.

The Amp itself opened in 2012 and has become an important part of Downtown Carrollton’s entertainment and community life, hosting concerts, movies, special events and other gatherings throughout the year.

What I especially like is the atmosphere. Bring a folding chair, find a spot, visit the downtown businesses, grab something to eat, and enjoy an evening outside with live music.

If you are looking for a West Side destination where you can shop, eat, explore and hear some great music all in one trip, Adamson Square is definitely worth the drive.
