A Journey To Heighten Awareness
Of Kidney Disease And The Need For Kidney Donors

To answer the question: “What is “The Organ Trail?” it’s necessary to l

ook ahead and then look back. In March, 2023, Mark Scotch, age 67 will once again hit “The Organ Trail,” cycling his way 1,300 miles to promote kidney disease awareness, living donor need, and post-donation functionality, this time with a marathon bike ride from Lubbock, Texas to New Orleans, Louisiana. March 21st, 2022 Mark left San Diego, at age 66, still with one kidney, and continued on through Los Angeles, Phoenix and Albuquerque before stopping in Lubbock, Texas, a distance of 1,360 miles. In September, 2021, Mark, completed his second Organ Trail journey of 1,600 miles from Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts to his home in Plover, Wisconsin. In May, 2021, Mark, age, 65 completed his first Organ Trail journey of 1,500 miles from Madison, Wisconsin to Natchitoches, Louisiana. Now, from Mark Scotch himself, a description of his journeys:

“The Organ Trail is all about generating awareness of the need for kidney donors, especially living kidney donors; but it’s also about showing people that even with one kidney, you can still lead a life full of activities, even if those activities are sustained and vigorous.”

Here’s how it all began. We like to joke that:

“A guy goes into a bar and comes out with only one kidney.”

Well, no --- that's not the beginning of a joke, but it begins to explain how The Organ Trail began. Early in 2020, Mark Scotch --- retired from a career of selling diagnostic equipment in the paper mill industry –- met Hugh Smith, a 56-year-old former professional horse jockey –- at Cane River Brewing in Hugh’s hometown of Natchitoches, Louisiana. Although neither had ever seen the other before, both men can be described as “guys who never met a stranger.” They soon began to talk and here’s what Mark learned about Hugh. To combat the aches and pains he took ibuprofen. And more ibuprofen. And lots more ibuprofen. That was decades ago when consumers were not effectively warned about the dangers of taking too much of that drug. Consequently, Hugh’s kidneys were damaged and over the years became progressively worse. Renal failure hit hard in 2019 and for ten hours every night, Hugh was on peritoneal dialysis –-a type of dialysis that uses the peritoneum in a person’s abdomen as a membrane through which fluid and dissolved substances are exchanged with the blood. Hugh had been accepted on the waitlist for a kidney transplant from a deceased donor and became one of nearly 100,000 Americans waiting for a life-saving kidney. By the time we each wake up tomorrow morning, 13 of those patients will have died for lack of a donor. Just the day before, the two men had been strangers. That day, in a bar in Louisiana, Mark Scotch knew what he wanted to do: give one of his kidneys to Hugh Smith. It was one of those extraordinary times in life when a decision is instantly clear. The fact that Hugh had not been known to Mark more than an hour earlier did not matter. It was the thing to do. By mid-August, 2020, Mark and Hugh had both gone through extensive medical testing and screening. Through the National Kidney Registry Voucher Program Mark became a “voucher donor” where he would be matched with a recipient somewhere in the country. Once the kidney donation was complete, Mark could also name Hugh as the person he wanted to benefit, which would give the former jockey higher priority on the National Kidney Registry transplant list. By using the voucher program through the National Kidney Registry, Mark being a match with Hugh wasn’t necessary. It also allows donors and recipients to complete transplantations with the highest degree of compatibility, thereby greatly reducing the chances of rejection. Says Mark: “The voucher system allowed me to do everything at my local hospital in Madison, Wisconsin while Hugh went to his local hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, and was given higher priority on the transplant list.”

In September 2020, Mark Scotch was matched with a compatible individual in New York and successfully donated his kidney. In February 2021, Hugh Smith received his much-needed kidney from Southern California. Both men are healthy and have resumed normal lifestyles. The journey of The Organ Trail has only just begun. We invite you to continue reading this page for frequent updates. We invite you to learn more about the importance of kidney donation and with that knowledge become an advocate by helping inform the general public. We invite you to consider kidney donation yourself. With 3,000 new patients added monthly to the kidney waiting list, and 13 people dying every day because of a shortage of kidneys, Mark Scotch, the cyclist-turned-kidney donor plans to continue raising awareness about living kidney donation through The Organ Trail.

DAY 20 – Sunday, May 17
📍 Delabar State Park → Hampton
🚴‍♂️ Miles: 79

Still rolling strong.

Changing of the guard today as Bill handed over the keys to Dean and Gee Gee Jannene. New driver crew, same mission. 🚐💚

After resting our heads along the Mississippi River last night, the journey continued north along the Great River Road. From quiet morning sunrises and roses in bloom to friendly waves from passing travelers, yesterday was one of those days that reminds you to slow down and take it all in.

Drivers exchanging niceties. Fishermen out on the river. Historic trails. Endless miles beside the mighty Mississippi. Every stop has a story. Every mile spreads more awareness for living donation.

✨ Fun fact: Hampton is part of the Quad Cities region along the Mississippi River.

Every mile = more awareness.

Every Organ Trail ride the mom of my best friend, Mark Bruner, comes to me.
Joanne came to me this morning as she blew me down the road in a 20 mph tailwind.
The phrase “no chain” came to me, made popular by mtn biker Bob Roll. Joanne not only introduced me to Bob via his book, but also compared me to him via our numerous, and sometimes horrific bike crashes.
Joanne loved biking and I’m sure she’d have joined me many times along THE ORGAN TRAIL.
She’d definitely here in spirit and as my guardian angel.

DAY 19 – Saturday, May 16
📍 Warsaw → Delabar State Park
🚴‍♂️ Miles: 73

Nature. Miles. Meaning.

From Mark:

"Yesterday was a bit of a rocky road ahead.
It’s times like these that reminds me of why we do these rides, to help those that need our help. To try to instill in them the hope to carry on through the tough times.

That there are people like Jim Colby, Bill Kelly, GeeGee and Dean Jannene, Jennie Hinz, Christina Austin, Mark Bruner, Lynn, and all the folks the help with our events, the people that support the effort riding with me….we all tell the story that needs to be told for the 95,000 on the kidney wait list. And maybe most importantly, all of you following along, that you’ll share some of this to ‘your story’ so many, many, more will come to learn about the urgent and dire need and the real ability that many of them, too, can save a life.”

Had a lunch stop in Quincy, IL, a river town packed with history along the Mississippi.

✨ Fun fact: Delabar State Park is known for its hiking trails and panoramic views of the Mississippi Valley."

DAY 18 – Friday, May 15
📍 Louisiana → Warsaw
🚴‍♂️ Miles: 81

Morning sip. Just me and my shadow returning back from Louisiana 😆

After a night of rain, thunder, and lightning storms that finally cleared around 6:30am, the road opened up for a big mileage day ahead. Sunny skies, temps climbing to 83°, and SSE winds at 10–20 mph.

Life is good.

✨ Fun fact: Warsaw sits along the Mississippi River and is known for its scenic river bluffs.

This is what endurance + purpose looks like.

DAY 17 ☀️🚴‍♂️

Today’s ride included a brunch stop somewhere in Louisiana… or at least that’s what the sign says. 😅

Nothing fancy today. Just good food in the RV, stories from the road, and another reminder that some of the best moments on these journeys happen during the quiet breaks in between the miles.

✨ Fun fact: Louisiana, Missouri sits right along the Mississippi River and was named after the Louisiana Territory - not the state of Louisiana.

The miles keep rolling. So does the mission. 💚

Good Morning, Old Man River! 🌊🚴‍♂️

DAY 17 – Thursday, May 14
📍 Grafton → Louisiana
🚴‍♂️ Miles: 67

Crossing rivers. Crossing state lines. Continuing the mission.

Another beautiful morning along the Mississippi River as Mark keeps pushing forward mile by mile, sharing the message of organ donation and the power of second chances.

✨ Fun fact: Louisiana, Missouri is named after the Louisiana Territory — not the state!

The river keeps flowing, and so does this journey. 💚
