Amputation Prevention Is a Health Equity Issue
Diabetes is the single greatest risk factor for non-traumatic lower-limb amputations, accounting for 80% of cases. Every three and a half minutes, a person with diabetes undergoes an amputation.
The impact is devastating—people who have experienced an amputation have a lower five-year survival rate than those diagnosed with coronary artery disease, breast cancer, or colorectal cancer.
That’s why the National Coalition of 100 Black Women,MECCA Chapter Health Committee in partnership with the American Diabetes Association®, supports the Amputation Prevention Alliance (APA). This national effort focuses on disrupting the curve of amputations, particularly among low-income and minority populations disproportionately affected by diabetes.
Through education, advocacy, and policy change at the state and federal levels, this partnership is working to improve access to care and drive meaningful change.
Together, we are committed to prevention, equity, and saving lives.
