What if Women's History Month wasn't just about celebrating the "firsts" and the "exceptional" women?

What if we also honored the networks, friendships, mentorships, and communities that made individual achievements possible?

Behind every famous name were dozens supporting each other, developing strategies together, and creating systems of care.

History isn't made by individual stars but by constellations working together. Who's in your constellation of support? Who are you supporting?

To round out Women's History Month, let's talk about women's studies

In 1970, if you searched university catalogs nationwide, you wouldn't find a single course dedicated to women's history, literature, psychology, or economics.

That changed when San Diego State University students and professors established the first formal Women's Studies program, essentially declaring that half of humanity's experiences deserved academic attention. This wasn't just adding a few books to reading lists – it meant questioning fundamental assumptions in every discipline, from who gets cited in research to whose health symptoms are studied.

The program faced ridicule and resistance, with critics calling it "unscholarly," yet within ten years, hundreds of programs existed nationwide.

Something worth noticing this Women's History Month: Often the quietest voices have the most important things to say.

The ones who hesitate before speaking often have the deepest insights. The ones who question everything often see solutions others miss.

The ones who feel they don't quite fit often create new paths forward. Let's make space for these voices – in classrooms, boardrooms, and everywhere decisions are made.

Who are you making space for today?

Women's History Month celebrates boundary-breakers like Dr. Mae Jemison, who became NASA's first Black female astronaut in 1992.

A physician, engineer, Peace Corps volunteer, and dancer, Dr. Jemison has never believed in limiting herself to one field.

After leaving NASA, she founded The Earth We Share, an international science camp for students, and leads the 100 Year Starship project to ensure human interstellar travel within a century.

Her philosophy—"Never limit yourself because of others' limited imagination"—inspires children to dream beyond current possibilities and embrace multiple passions

In 1971, newsstands were filled with women's magazines explaining how to please your husband and lose those stubborn 10 pounds.

Then Ms. Magazine arrived, selling out 300,000 copies in 8 days.....with revolutionary content: women writing about workplace harassment, abortion, domestic violence, and systemic sexism.

With its preview issue featuring Wonder Woman on the cover declaring "Wonder Woman for President," Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes created not just a magazine but a movement that treated women as complete humans with interests beyond cooking and fashion.

When we scroll through today's feminist content online, we're seeing the digital descendants of what Ms. Magazine pioneered when most media still relegated women to the "lifestyle" section.

A striking thought this Women's History Month: Many women's "wildest dreams" just a generation ago are basic rights we take for granted today.

Having your own bank account. Wearing what you want. Speaking up in meetings. Making medical decisions. Pursuing education.

Each generation of women stands on the shoulders of those who fought for freedoms that later became normal.

What rights do you exercise freely that women before you had to fight for?

What might future generations take for granted that we're still working toward?
