Meet Board Member Mark McGruder

Mark McGruder, a Los Angeles native now based in Atlanta, is a proud Morehouse College alumnus, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business Administration. He also holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

With a professional career rooted in commercial real estate investment and strategy, Mark has held leadership roles in asset management, acquisitions, and portfolio management — investing in and managing over $3 billion in asset value. Today, he serves as an independent equity investor and community impact advocate, with a focused commitment to advancing students of color and contributing to the continued growth of HBCU’s.

Mark brings both deep financial expertise and a strong sense of mission-driven purpose to the True Blue 1881 Board as we launch our 100,000 Futures Campaign. His strategic insight and commitment to impact will be instrumental in guiding our national expansion and ensuring we build a sustainable foundation for long-term growth.

Joy Smith Johnson serves as Co-Founder and Board Treasurer of True Blue 1881, helping shape both the vision and financial foundation of our organization from the very beginning. A Columbus, Ohio native now based in Atlanta, Joy brings a dynamic blend of strategic insight, technical expertise, and deep commitment to community impact.
She earned a Master of Science in Data Analytics from Southern New Hampshire University and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Spelman College.

As a proud Spelman graduate and fourth-generation HBCU alumna, Joy understands firsthand the transformative power of HBCU education and the financial barriers that can stand in a student’s way. She firmly believes no scholar’s academic journey should be delayed or disrupted due to lack of resources.

As Board Secretary, Túere plays a critical role in strengthening governance, ensuring organizational accountability, and maintaining the structure that supports our continued expansion. A longtime and dedicated member of the True Blue 1881 Board of Directors, Kimberly Bryant now serves as Chair of the Board, bringing seasoned leadership, strategic discipline, and unwavering commitment to our national growth.

With more than 20 years of experience in Enterprise Portfolio and Program Management at AT&T and formerly BellSouth, Kimberly is known as a trusted executive advisor and transformational leader. Her expertise in governance, cross-functional strategy, and results-driven ex*****on strengthens the operational backbone of True Blue 1881 as we expand our impact nationwide.

As Board Chair, Kimberly plays a critical role in guiding the advancement of the 100,000 Futures Campaign and ensuring our work to remove barriers to graduation remains disciplined, scalable, and sustainable. From scholarships to senior balance support and food insecurity initiatives, her leadership helps ensure that students across all 107 HBCUs have the resources they need to persist, graduate, and thrive.

Meet Founder & CEO Tiombé O’Rourke

A proud Spelman College graduate from Columbus,Ohio who founded True Blue 1881 in 2017 after witnessing an urgent need among students navigating food insecurity and financial hardship. What began as a simple, grassroots response to student hunger at Spelman College quickly became something much bigger.

True Blue 1881 was born from listening — listening to students navigating food insecurity, financial hardship, and the quiet burdens that too often derail their success and futures. What started as a grassroots effort to meet immediate needs across the Atlanta University Center has since grown into a national movement rooted in dignity, access, and student well-being.

Under Tiombé O’Rourke’s leadership, True Blue 1881 has distributed more than $620,000 directly to students, assisted 1,600+ scholars, supported students across 42+ HBCUs nationwide, and helped hundreds remain enrolled and cross the graduation stage.

Today marks the next chapter. With the launch of our Governing and National Advisory Board, True Blue 1881 is advancing into national expansion and leading the 100,000 Futures Campaign — a bold commitment to support 100,000 HBCU students by 2040.

What began as emergency response has evolved into intentional, sustainable pathways so students can thrive — not just survive.
