I want to be clear on something. Previous boards of commissioners in four counties set up the JDA and Stanton Springs, long before I became a commissioner. I was placed on the JDA about a year and a half ago by the Newton County Board of Commissioners. I believe that any revenue generated by this development and portioned out to Newton County should go to relieve property owners' property taxes. We SHOULD NOT look for new ways to spend the money simply because we have it. The initial investment was with taxpayer money, so slowing property tax increases is my personal intent. The county started receiving the money in 2021 and my property taxes have still increased yearly but because we apply this revenue to the bottom line budget, my taxes have not increased at the rate they would have had we not gotten the funds. It is very simple really - DO NOT look for pork or special interest projects to spend the money on. Use it for its intended purpose which is property tax relief, which the BOC has done since 2021.

The Newton County Board of Commissioners heard an update on the Joint Development Authority (JDA) of Newton, Jasper, Morgan and Walton Counties at their regular meeting on March 17.

I echo Commissioner Long's sentiments. We have been in this and the Sockwell Corners struggles since 2022 or 2023 and it has now played out in court, although I do not believe either case is completely over. Public input and sentiment is crucial so we appreciate the voices as well.
