Now Open: Grandfamilies & Kinship University

Grandfamilies & Kinship University (GKU) is a new, national leadership and community-impact program launched by Generations United. Designed for kinship caregivers, including grandaparents, relatives, and close family friends raising children, GKU helps participants build skills, connect with others, and create change in their communities.

Through leadership training, peer learning, and community-based projects, kinship caregivers will build the skills, tools, and relationships to turn their lived experience into action, support their own families, and create change for others like them.
You do not need a formal title or prior leadership to apply. What matters most is your lived experience and your desire to make a difference.

Applications are open through June 8, 2026. A limited number of participants will be selected for this inaugural cohort.
If you are a kinship caregiver, we encourage you to apply. If you support kinship families or know someone who may be interested, please share this opportunity with them.

Apply here: https://www.gu.org/projects/gku/

What is Grandfamilies & Kinship University? Across the country, more than 2.5 million children are being raised by grandparents, relatives, and close family friends, often at a moment’s notice, and without support. These kinship and grandfamilies often form overnight, when a parent faces challenge...

🌻 Seeds planted. Gardens growing. Community thriving! 🌻

Generations Together is beyond thankful for The Home Depot’s (Fayetteville) Aaron Jackson incredible generosity in supporting our Gardens Program!

Our Grandparent and Kinship families recently came together for a group garden build — and it was AMAZING. Because of Home Depot's support, families now have flourishing home gardens to help offset the rising cost of food and put fresh, healthy meals on the table. 🥦🍓🌽

This is what community looks like. This is what generosity looks like. And THIS is why we do what we do.

A special shoutout to Grace Church for hosting this wonderful project and providing the perfect space for our families to come together and get growing! We couldn't have done it without you! 🙏⛪💛

Thank you, Home Depot, for helping our families grow — in every sense of the word! 💪💚

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is a critical support for many grandfamilies and kinship caregivers helping children thrive.

TANF child-only grants supported more than 280,000 children raised by grandparents and other relatives in FY 2023, helping keep children safely with kin and out of the foster care system. As Congress reviews TANF and other social service programs, policymakers need to hear how essential this support is for kinship families nationwide.

📣 Take action today! Tell your Members of Congress to protect TANF for grandfamilies and kinship caregivers through Generations United’s Policy Action Hub: https://www.gu.org/resources/policy-and-action-hub/

This Giving Tuesday, we’re asking you to stand with the heroes who rarely ask for help: grandparents and relatives raising children.

These caregivers step in during crisis—often overnight, often on limited incomes—and give children the most important gift of all: family stability.

At Generations Together, we support kinship families with essentials, support groups, navigation through social services, and programs that help children thrive.

💛 Your donation today keeps families together and strengthens the caregivers who step up when no one else can.
