From Tragedy to Triumph: Meet Maria Kiara

Konyu Maria Kiara has every reason to give up, but she chose to rise.

Raised by her grandmother in Bafut, Maria’s life changed tragically when the ongoing crisis claimed the life of the woman who had been her only source of support. Displaced and left without a home, her future, and her education,became uncertain.

Then compassion opened another door. Through a teacher, Maria met Mummy Delphine, who gave her shelter and connected her to the MENDEM Scholarship Program.

Today, Maria is not simply surviving, she is excelling. She emerged as MENDEM’s best-performing Advanced Level scholar with an outstanding 2As, 2Bs and 1C (21/25 points).

Passionate about science and helping others, Maria dreams of becoming a medical doctor. Her story is powerful evidence of what can happen when resilience meets opportunity.

And there are more young people like Maria whose potential is greater than their circumstances.

*From Loss to Excellence: Meet Noriatou*

When Noriatou Berinyuy lost her father during the Anglophone crisis, her family was forced to leave Kumbo for Bamenda. With her mother unemployed and struggling to provide for the family, continuing her education became uncertain.

Then came an opportunity through the MENDEM Scholarship Program.

Noriatou did not waste it.

She has just completed her GCE Ordinary Level with an exceptional 10 papers—6 As, 3 Bs and 1 C, earning 25 points. Behind those grades is a young girl who refused to allow tragedy to determine the limits of her future.

Now she dreams of pursuing a career in the medical field. But she needs more than school fees. She needs a Career Parent—someone willing to invest in her education, mentor her, and help her navigate the journey from academic potential to meaningful impact.

Noriatou is one story. There are many more young people whose circumstances threaten their dreams, but whose potential remains extraordinary.

*From Uncertainty to Excellence: Meet Regmitch*

For Yumeh Regmitch, staying in school has never been guaranteed.

When the grandfather who supported his education retired and became ill, the family struggled to keep up with his school fees. At one point, Regmitch was sent home from school. With insecurity in Kumbo making other schooling options difficult, his mother took on the burden of supporting his education despite her own financial challenges.

Through the MENDEM Scholarship Program, Regmitch has continued pursuing his education—and he is making the opportunity count.

He recently completed his GCE Ordinary Level with an impressive 10 papers: 4 As, 1 B and 5 Cs.

Regmitch dreams of becoming a nutritionist, combining his passion for health and agriculture to contribute to Cameroon’s food-processing sector and help people make healthier nutritional choices.

He now needs a Career Parent, someone who will go beyond paying school fees to mentor him, expose him to opportunities and help turn his potential

*From the Sound of Gunshots to a Dream of Healing: Meet Martin*

For Toh Martin, the dream of becoming an engineer was born from something no child should have to witness.

Growing up amid Cameroon’s Anglophone crisis, Martin encountered victims of violence whose injuries left a lasting impression on him. Rather than allowing those experiences to define him by fear, he began dreaming of one day developing artificial limbs and technologies that could restore dignity to people who have lost theirs.

His determination to learn was extraordinary. At one point, insecurity forced him to disguise himself as a mechanic just to attend school safely. Later, when his father lost his livelihood and his family could no longer afford his fees at Sacred Heart College Mankon, Martin’s education was again at risk. His academic excellence, however, caught the attention of his principal, who connected him to the MENDEM Scholarship Program.

Martin has made that opportunity count.

*From Interrupted Dreams to Outstanding Achievement: Meet Julieta*

When conflict reached Fontem, Anyikeh Julieta’s life changed dramatically. Her father was lost to violence, her mother’s small business was destroyed, and the family was displaced to Yaoundé.

With limited resources, Julieta made a painful sacrifice: she stayed out of school so her elder brother could continue his education.

Then she encountered the MENDEM Scholarship Program, and the door to education reopened. Even when her family later relocated to Buea, MENDEM continued walking with her.

Today, that investment is bearing remarkable fruit. Julieta completed her GCE Advanced Level with 2 As, 1 B and 2 Cs, an outstanding 20/25 points, making her MENDEM’s second-best A-Level scholar.

Julieta’s story captures what the MENDEM Scholarship Program is about: finding potential interrupted by circumstances and giving it another chance to flourish.

Now she needs a Career Parent who will go beyond sponsoring her education, to mentor her become.
