We dread those special dates such as the Angelversary date. We feel anxiety building up inside with each day that draws nearer. Have something planned for “that day” — even if it’s the simple act of lighting a candle.

He isn't here.

And that truth
still stops me mid-breath
sometimes.

There are moments
when I wish I could
hear his voice again.

See his face.

Sit beside him.

Have just one more
ordinary conversation.

But there is another truth
I carry too.

I was his mother.

I got to know him.

I got to love him.

I got to watch him
become the person
he was meant to be.

And no ending
can take those years away.

The heartbreak is real.

But so is the privilege.

I will always be grateful
that I was the mother
he ran to.
