Useful communication guidelines from the organization “Over Zero” when speaking about political violence.

Unequivocally denounce political violence.
“Violence has no place in our democracy. Our democratic ideals rest on our continued commitment to resolving our differences peacefully.”

Emphasize expectations of non-violence.
“We are heartened to see leaders across the political spectrum forcefully condemning this violence. We know that a prosperous country and democracy hinge on peaceful political participation.”

Activate a shared identity using state, county, or city-specific language when you can, through nicknames, slogans, and hashtags.
“We’ve been through a lot together in [city/state]. One thing I know from my time here is that while we may face challenges and while we may disagree, [people from state, county or city e.g. Texans] reject violence. The people of this [city/state] are committed to upholding our democratic processes.”

“All leaders must act responsibly. In our community, we will not accept leaders deliberately stoking distrust in a free and fair election.”

Reaffirm commitment to participating in the democratic process.
“We and [insert other leaders] are committed to upholding everyone’s right to safely participate in the democratic process–from those running for office, to those attending political rallies and protests, to those casting their votes.”

Tell people “who we are,” in addition to who we are not, particularly when framing a call to action. Assert strong, unifying norms and values to model behavior and expectations.
“In our community, we believe in nonviolent protest, and we do not and will not condone violence.”

If addressing the events directly, be specific about what is and is not known.
“What we know so far is [verified information]. We are continuing to investigate and are committed to keeping you informed.”

Over Zero was founded in response to the global need to counteract and prevent identity-based violence and other forms of group-targeted harm. We emerged as an outgrowth of Sisi ni Amani International, an organization founded to strengthen local violence prevention efforts through leveraging c.....

Georgia’s Interfaith Voice

The Georgia Interfaith Public Policy Center (GIPPC) is the interfaith voice in the forum of Georgia public policy.

The Center educates, communicates, represents and mobilizes the interfaith community in the public square. Our leaders include representatives from many of the faith communities in Georgia and we actively welcome and invite new partners.

GIPPC provides a state-wide, coordinated, approach to issues that the faith community has a strong call to address.

The Center is supported by partners in the faith community, foundations that support our tenets, individual donors, advocates, and volunteers.
