Another local rescue has a blind kitten in need of a home ASAP!!!

Tickles the blind kitten was returned 😥😥

We feel so sad for the whole situation— for him and the family who adopted him. His owner was in tears handing him back to us🥺. ….But overall, we just want what’s best all around.. especially after pouring so much love and energy into him, we are grateful he came back here as we always request. ❤️❤️ Tickles was adopted by one of the techs at our vets office after she fell in love with him at his first visit as a tiny baby. As he grew with us awaiting adoption day, he definitely became more rambunctious and curious in nature— especially being blind. He liked to use his paws to feel things, search for your face holding it, and would do little love bites. So we can totally understand where she’s coming from with his personality quirks.

He was adopted 6 weeks ago. We got a message 2-3ish weeks later about the situation with him and how they wanted to continue trying to work with Tickles to fit in, but there was a possibility of him coming back. We sooo appreciate the heads up and appreciate the family really taking the time and effort to make the best decision and not making a snap judgement. Ultimately, he wasn’t fitting into their lifestyle with them working and him being so needy and rambunctious. She said he is very energetic and playful and would get rough with his mouth when trying to be handled and although he could be cuddly at times, he always wanted to play. They had all types of enrichment activities and sensory mats etc. Wanting to grow their pet family even more in the future, they even recently tried with introducing another young kitten and said Tickles was growling, hissing and not happy. She said she felt that wanting to foster and adopt more pets wouldn’t be possible with Tickles😞. We went through this too when introducing him to others— so we know how dramatic he was at first with new animals. It took a good adjustment period here, but he was eventually fine so we know being with another playful friend will be the best thing for him— it will just take time.

Being blind, every little change is a big deal to him. That’s what breaks our heart the most. He will be ok but I know he will be confused for a bit.😭. We brought him back today and he has the bathroom suite to himself while he does another quick quarantine time and to allow him to re-learn us as his humans. Then he will meet the other cats. We would LOVE to find him a home as quickly as possible because if he really settles in here again, it’ll be another big adjustment when he is adopted and constant change isn’t the best thing for him being blind. So please spread the word. We will need a patient family with another playful cat who is ok with his silly teenager antics and being extra needy. Blind cats are amazing and although they may use their other senses a little more, like their paws and mouth, they are extra happy babies. ❤️. We know, we have 3!

We will keep you guys posted on how he re-adjusts and we will be giving him extra extra love. Tickles will get lots of tickles— his favorite thing in the world❤️. If you are interested in meeting him, please reach out ❤️❤️

So sorry for the delay, y’all! We have been preparing for DragonCon, which is one of the biggest events of the year for us. My husband Dusty Gannon has two shows & we have a booth every day, come find us on the lower level of the Marriott. I have super limited special keychains and pins for Odd Paws, as well as art prints of my photography, to fundraise. I’ll be putting the leftovers online if we have any!

I think asking y’all to guess what was “wrong” with ZuZu may have been too easy, given my pretty well known love of tripods 😂 𓇼 ⋆.˚ 𓆉 𓆝 𓆡⋆.˚ 𓇼 guessed it in literally the first comment lol. She is indeed a back leg tripod. I’m also a total sucker and didn’t want her to be all alone in the office, so she has a friend with her. His name is Fennel, he’s 6 years old and has been ignored in the shelter since June. He’s an EXTREMELY sweet boy and grabs your hand when you stop petting him. Both of these babies are very affectionate sweeties- Zuzu is pretty vocal, too. She likes to follow you around and tell you her opinions on everything.

DON’T FEED WILD BABIES!

A baby squirrel is not a learning opportunity.

Yesterday, a post was made by someone who had found a baby squirrel and did not know what to feed it. The comments quickly filled with well-intentioned advice from people who were also inexperienced. So many suggestions for formulas and foods that can seriously injure or kill a fragile baby animal.

We commented directly on the post. We explained that the safest thing for this baby was to remain unfed until it could be placed with someone qualified to care for it. We also privately messaged the finder and offered guidance. They were within 20 minutes of us, and we offered to pick up multiple times.

Our messages were ignored for the entire day, despite this person continuing to interact with other comments on her post.

At that point, we contacted DNR law enforcement because the animal’s life was at risk, and they were ultimately able to obtain the squirrel. But by then, the damage had already been done.

The finder had fed the baby. This squirrel bloated and died.

This is exactly why wildlife rehabilitation is not something you can learn by reading Facebook comments. Baby squirrels have extremely specific nutritional and husbandry requirements. Their digestive systems are incredibly delicate. The wrong formula, concentration, feeding technique, temperature, or volume can cause aspiration, gastrointestinal complications, severe bloat, metabolic problems, and death.

And NO, cow’s milk is not okay. Goat’s milk is not a substitute. Human baby formula is not appropriate. Kitten formula isn’t automatically safe simply because someone on the internet says they used it. Wildlife species are not interchangeable, and neonatal animals are not pets.

The heartbreaking part is that this baby could have survived if it had simply been left alone and transferred to someone qualified. Being willing to help is not the same thing as being qualified to help. ESPECIALLY when the help is throwing itself at you, desperately trying to tell you not to kill this baby.

Please stop giving people confidence to experiment with the lives of wild animals. Stop recommending formulas because “I raised one this way,” or “My aunt had a squirrel for 39 years and fed it goat’s milk.” Stop telling strangers on Facebook what to feed a species you have never properly rehabilitated.

And if a licensed rehabilitator tells you DO NOT FEED IT, listen.

A baby animal being hungry for a few hours while it is safely transported to a qualified rehabilitator is far safer than being given the wrong food and dying from it.

Wildlife rehabilitation requires training, permits, species-specific knowledge, veterinary relationships, appropriate facilities, and the willingness to recognize when you are not the person who should be doing it.

Good intentions do not undo preventable deaths. You are NOT a Disney Princess, so please set your ego aside. If you are passionate about helping these animals, teaching yourself isn’t the way to do it.

Jazz and Lily need somewhere to go on Monday. At the moment, they’re just going to end up in my one room office, as we have ten cats here and cannot have any more fosters in the house.

I got a message about a CH kitten that I would like to take in, but I can’t unless Jazz and Lily have somewhere to go.
Currently the CH kitten is in a county shelter, which is not an ideal environment.

Can anyone take Jazz and Lily?? With adoptions down, we are SO backed up!
