A bill awaiting Gov. Mike DeWine's signature would strip ORCA, the org that manages Baileys Trail System, of $750,000 in funding. The proposed cut comes after lobbying firm Sunday Creek Horizons declined a new contract with ORCA, and Mayor Steve Patterson stepped down from ORCA's board and pulled Athens from the organization. "It cost Adams next to nothing to keep the ANews website up — just the domain registration fee and the cost for a portion of its servers. It could have won community good will by leaving that information readily available. But they didn’t, because they don’t care about getting you information if you aren’t willing or able to pony up for that access."

Editor-in-chief Corinne Colbert addressed the disappearance of the Athens News in her latest letter to the editor. Link in comments.

This summer, the Athens County Independent wants to hear from you. What’s going on in your neck of the woods? What’s missing from local news coverage? What information do you need — and what’s the best way to get it?

To get those answers, we’re holding a series of gatherings on Wednesdays around the county where you can add your voice to local news. Great local news starts with you. Come tell us about your community and what you need from us.

🍦 To sweeten the deal, we’ll have ice cream and fresh individual pies from Flour & Thyme! And bring the kids — we’ll have activities just for them, too. Learn more https://athensindependent.com/speak-your-mind/

Chauncey Mayor Frank Campbell told the Independent he was "very frustrated" that an anti-discrimination ordinance wasn't repealed at last week's Chauncey Village Council meeting, which drew over 50 people. After over 20 members of the public spoke, the council voted to retain the ordinance, which protects employment, housing, and public accommodation on the basis of gender, sexuality, age, marital status, and other classes.

“Unfortunately, what happens in the end is, it didn’t benefit a single person,” he said. Coverage through the link in comments.
