We’ve gotten rid of almost every place people used to casually exist together and now act shocked that everyone is depressed, isolated, addicted, angry, or emotionally exhausted.

Now people go to work, go home, and rot in isolation while being told this is just “how life is.”

But actually humans were not built for this.

Mental health but specifically for people whose coping skills include:
🦇becoming nocturnal in the garage
🍽️staring into the fridge like it contains ancient wisdom
🚗driving around listening to the same song until the brain raccoon settles down
⛈️standing outside at 1 am processing emotions through weather exposure

Highly clinical. Very evidence-based. 💚

It’s really easy to have conversations about rural mental health that focus on what communities lack.

And yes, access gaps, provider shortages, transportation barriers, and isolation very much exist.

But it’s also really important to recognize this:
Support already exists here.

It just doesn’t always look the way people expect it to.

Sometimes support is practical. Sometimes it’s awkward.

Sometimes it’s sitting in silence in somebody’s garage while they hand you a wrench and pretend not to notice you’re having a hard week.

May has been acknowledged as Mental Health Awareness Month in the US since 1949.

I know what you’re thinking: You talk about mental health ALL THE TIME. What’s new?

You’re right. Nothing new here. So I thought we could break down some of the most common issues we see daily in rural treatment.

What do you feel like you see most often?

If this makes you uncomfy, that’s good. These are the things that change outcomes.

Ever notice how one seemingly normal sentence can detonate a whole room?

Like you’re playing a game of telephone and no one heard the original message so now grandma is ready to throw hands?

It’s not miscommunication. It’s generations of different types of conditioning reacting on autopilot. And everyone is convinced they’re the only sane one.

We talk a lot about healing but your nervous system is sitting in the background going: “cool, but I’m still preparing for danger.”

Trauma and chronic stress aren’t just things you remember; they’re things your body has learned. Through repetition. Through survival. Through adapting in ways that made sense at the time.

As Bessel van der Kolk writes in The Body Keeps the Score, trauma isn’t just stored as narrative. It’s held in the body, in sensations, in physiology, in the ways your systems continue to respond long after the threat is gone.

Biologically, no amount of self-awareness will override a nervous system that hasn’t had the chance to consistently experience safety.

Swipe through to learn more & learn what is effective in rewiring these automatic responses.

Confusion is one of the most overlooked signs of relational abuse.

We’re often taught that harm should feel obvious: clear, painful, undeniable. But when harm happens inside a relationship that also includes care, attention, or love, it rarely feels that simple.

Instead, it can look like overthinking, second-guessing yourself, replaying conversations.

That confusion is what happens when trust and harm exist side by side. And over time, that can shift how you see yourself.

If you’ve ever felt more confused than safe in a relationship, that’s worth paying attention to.

Mental health conditions don’t happen because someone is “dramatic,” “lazy,” or “not tough enough.”

They develop from a mix of biology, environment, stress exposure, & access to support

Some people simply carry more risk.

People with chronic illness often speak in shorthand. Not because they’re hiding, but because explaining everything is exhausting.

When we slow down and listen for what’s underneath, we make room for mental health care that actually fits.
