Ashtabula Lions Club Provides Vision Screenings for Children.
From June through August 2026, the Ashtabula Lions Club provided free vision screenings at numerous school and community events. During this time, Lions conducted more than 300 vision screenings. Of those screened, only 21 children were referred to an eye care professional for a comprehensive eye examination based on their screening results.
The Lions conduct vision screenings to help detect potential vision problems at an early age. The screenings can identify risk factors such as:
Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) – reduced vision in one eye that can develop during childhood.
Myopia (Nearsightedness) – difficulty seeing objects clearly at a distance.
Hyperopia (Farsightedness) – difficulty seeing objects clearly up close.
Astigmatism – an irregular shape of the eye that can cause blurred or distorted vision.
Gaze Asymmetry – misalignment between the right and left eyes.
Good vision is essential to a child's ability to learn and succeed in school. Early detection of vision problems allows children to receive appropriate care and can help prevent long-term vision difficulties.
Protecting children's eyesight is one of Lions Clubs International's Global Causes. The other Global Causes include Diabetes, Environment, Hunger, Childhood Cancer, Disaster Relief, Humanitarian Efforts, and Youth.
