Ashland Food Project

Ashland Food Project Building Community. Sharing Food. This is a bi-monthly food donation program - 2nd Saturday of even-numbered months. We are very thankful to our donors.

The Ashland Food Bank has doubled the amount of food donated to the Food Bank. We ask for non-perishable, "fresh" (no out-dated) and healthy food - if you would eat it, please add it to your donation! If a family added one item a week to their green bag, then a minimum of 8 items would be donated bi-monthly. Many of our donors fill their bags (and sometimes fill more than one).

ASK A FRIEND!
A message from Sally Kirkpatrick
AFP President and Food Bank Volunteer

In my last message, I mentioned I’d be sharing stories of neighbors whose lives have been directly impacted by your generosity.

Meet one of our longtime clients, a senior woman who has quietly relied on the Ashland Community Food Bank for over five years. She’s lived in six different places during that time, from a mobile home to hotel rooms to temporary housing. Her son has stayed with her on and off, and together, they’ve faced the challenge of making ends meet each month.

“I was on food stamps before I started coming to the Food Bank, but they never covered the whole month. When my son was living with me, it was even harder. The last week or two of every month, we just ran out of food. I’d buy whatever was on sale, but it was never enough.”

Walking into the Food Bank for the first time wasn’t easy. She carried a deep sense of guilt, believing the food should go to others who might need it more.

“I had a roof over my head, so I felt like I didn’t deserve the help. I avoided taking sandwiches or ready-made meals from the Free Table so others, especially people without a kitchen could have them.”

But the truth is, she needed help, too. And your donations made that help possible.

“Now, I don’t run out of food until maybe the last couple of days of the month. I can stretch my food stamps, and with the food from the Food Bank, I don’t have to choose between rent, utilities, and groceries.”

When asked what life would be like without the Food Bank, her answer was immediate:

“Oh boy… honestly, two weeks out of every month, I’d be starving. Really.”

Today, she’s stable in her own apartment. She still visits the Food Bank and still feels immense gratitude for every green bag that shows up.

“I’m so thankful. One day I hope I can donate food back, so I can help someone the way I’ve been helped.”

This is your kindness at work.

If you haven’t yet joined the Ask A Friend campaign, please consider doing so. You don’t need a big pitch, just tell someone why you give, and invite them to join you.

Well, what do ya know - the Ashland Food Project pickup is this coming Saturday, October 11. Please leave your lovely green bag(s) out by 9 AM (unless you have heard otherwise from your Neighborhood Coordinator).

Should be an active day in Ashland - there will be a city-wide mock emergency evacuation on Saturday ... and, of course, the evacuation route is on the way to the Ashland Community Food Bank, so our Neighborhood Coordinators will have some fun dropping off your donations! An Ashland traffic jam! Who knew!?!

Anyway, remember to put out your food donations!

If you would like to donate online, go to www.ashlandfoodproject.com.

And while you're there, please consider ASKING A FRIEND to be a donor ... more details will be delivered on Saturday, or go online! We need your help recruiting new food donors!

The Ashland Food Project pick up is on Saturday, August 9th.

What is the Ashland Food Project, you ask?

** 1 in 7 Americans struggle with hunger. **
Ashland Food Project is an innovative way to reduce hunger in our community. You want to help. We make it easy.

EVERY 2 MONTHS—on the second Saturday of every even-numbered month—our Neighborhood Coordinators pick up bags of healthy nonperishable food that neighbors have left outside their front doors. They leave empty green bags for next time and take all the food to the Ashland Community Food Bank. It’s that easy!

BECOME A FOOD DONOR
It takes: 15 minutes a month

Your role: Fill a green bag with nonperishable food every two months and put it outside your front door. That’s all there is to it!

Impact: One full green bag equals about ten meals. We combine your bag with your neighbors’ bags, and together we can feed the community!

Sip for a Cause: Join Us at Panache & Gusto/Le Petit Café Crêperiefor a Special Evening Benefiting the Ashland Food Project

Le Petit Café Crêperie
10 Water Street, Downtown Ashland
Thursday, June 26
6:00–8:00 PM (AFP hosted hours)

The Ashland Food Project is excited to announce a community-centered evening of connection, conversation, and giving – hosted by the delightful new pop-up wine bar, Panache and Gusto. Join us on Thursday, June 26th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Le Petit Café Crêperie (formerly Water Street Café) for a relaxed and informal fundraiser in support of the AFP.

Panache and Gusto is a new summer pop-up from co-owners Georgina Ruff and Megita Denton, bringing together small-production wines, female-driven labels, and stories that celebrate sustainability and artistry. Their mission aligns beautifully with our own: to build a stronger, more connected community, one neighbor at a time.

During our special evening, 10% of all proceeds from the bar (5:00–10:00 PM) will be generously donated to the Ashland Food Project, directly supporting our efforts to fight hunger and strengthen food security in our region.

This isn’t your typical fundraiser. There are no speeches or presentations, no tables or banners. Instead, this is about neighbors talking to neighbors over a glass of wine. AFP representatives will be there from 6:00–8:00 PM, sharing what we do and how easy it is to get involved. Whether you’re a longtime supporter or just curious, we’d love to chat.

We’ll have some informational cards and door hangers on hand if you want to take something with you – or pass it along to a friend.

At the Ashland Food Project, we believe that small actions like putting out a green bag every two months can lead to big change. Events like this help us grow our network, reach new neighbors, and continue the vital work of keeping the Ashland Community Food Bank well-stocked.

Come out, bring a friend, and enjoy a glass of thoughtfully chosen wine for a good cause.

We’ll see you there!

Thank you for supporting local food security and local wine!

The Ashland Food Project pickup has been DELAYED from this Saturday due to side-street conditions being quite "iffy" and not sure if they will be clear enough this Saturday for our Neighborhood Coordinators to do their pickups safely.

Also, we're guessing that some donors can't make it to the store to buy food for the Food Bank (or themselves).

SO, please mark your calendar for:
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd

Another AMAZING food drive...36,000lbs🥹🥰😍

Special thanks to the loaders who hauled a lot of food at the Ashland Community Food Bank! And to SOU Rotaract members, Tiana, Emily and Clarisa who made for a very efficient table.

AND to ALL the Ashland Food Project volunteers and neighborhood coordinators who braved the cold and wet conditions.

SO much LOVE from and for our community.
