Bruce's Buddies is a Cheatham County nonprofit founded by Jody and Ginger Vann that is dedicated to supporting individuals with special needs and their families. The organization is known for promoting inclusion through sensory-friendly events and by equipping local law enforcement and first responders with specialized sensory backpacks to better assist children with autism and other sensory needs during emergency situations. Their impact continues to make our community more welcoming, inclusive, and prepared for every child.

It can be look like they’re being dramatic, ignoring people or overreacting.

But what if they’re simply trying to cope?

For many children, everyday sounds can feel overwhelming. Covering their ears isn’t about attention-seeking or bad behaviour—it can be their brain’s way of reducing sensory overload and feeling safe.

Today’s Understanding the Why looks at this behaviour from the child’s perspective.
