The Children's Garden

The Children's Garden We are fascinated with observing and participating in the learning process of a young child. Visit us at www.childrensgarden.earth to get on our waitlist!

We are a community of families, educators, artists, and neighbors joining together to create inspiring learning experiences for young children near Asheville NC Our years of working in different educational environments with children show us that an artful balance of elements from the Reggio Emilia approach, Waldorf Education, and the Montessori method cultivates an integrated and meaningful learn

ing experience. We offer a variety of preschool and homeschool programs, Saturday camps, and Saturday Kids Night Outs. We believe that a child-led, project-rich curriculum facilitated by hands-on learning and real-life experiences will prepare our children to be lifelong learners and active contributors to the global community. We provide the children with a nurturing learning environment and atmosphere that celebrates individual uniqueness, promotes self esteem, and encourages cooperative, caring social interactions based upon mutual respect in a multi-age, family style setting. We encourage parent’s active participation as a means to strengthen the family unit as well as to increase community awareness and involvement. Dear Parents, we have some chilly days ahead of us! We are grateful for our warm classroom and we will also have the option for kids to have some outside time if they choose to. We love this picture guide to dressing well for cold weather! For kids who are not able to put on their own gloves mittens are wonderful! Wool longjohns can feel scratchy to sensitive skin, a first layer of silk thermals are wonderfully comfortable. Stay cozy!

We Need to Teach the Children the Old Words
by Caroline Mellor,
The Honey in the Bones

We need to teach the children the old words,
words like brabble and grubble,
twitter-light and clinkerbell;
words which dance and trip and slip
and drip like honey off the tongue
Teach them that a hazy halo of cloud
around the moon is called a moonbroch
and that swiftly moving clouds are named
cairies;
how a vixen’s wedding is a sunny shower of
rain, and that a single sunbeam breaking through thick cloud is known as a messenger
Teach them to know the seasons and scents
of queen of the meadow and bride of the sun,
how to tell Jupiter’s staff from fairy fingers
and which roses bloom with the strawberry moon
Teach them to spot pricklebacks in the tottlegrass,
how to recognise a smeuse or a bishop-barnaby,
when to watch the sky for flittermice and yaffles,
and to pay attention to the dumbeldore and mousearnickle
as she graces the lazy leahs of summer
Teach them a few of the old Sussex words for mud,
like gubber and slub and stodge and pug,
so they know that the precious soil beneath their toes
is anything but worthless dirt
Teach them to be users and keepers and makers
of the words which bring the land alive:
a storybook, where everything has its rightful place, including us;
where the wilds are fearful and filled with magic
and people do noble things, and nothing is impossible
In this world of harsh new words —
words like planetary dysmorphia and solastalgia,
extinction debt and grief mitigation,
megadrought and megafire,
anthropogenic, pyrocene,
words which alarm and get stuck in our throats
describing a world which our hearts cannot grasp —
we need to teach the children the old words,
so that if they should feel lost,
the old words might colour for them
a warm and breathing, living map,
a light to guide them safely home.

With the holidays being so busy there can be a lot of big feelings when things get overwhelming - and what's the first thing we can do to calm down when we start to feel upset?

BREATHE!

This is such a fun tool that really helps us to slow down and focus on our breathing!

First we decorated our popsicle sticks with markers and stickers.

Then with one side of a pipe cleaner taped to the popsicle stick we counted out 8 beads and beaded them onto the pipe cleaner.

After our beads were on we taped down the other side of the pipe cleaner.

To use the breathing beads we moved all the beads to one end of the pipe cleaner.

Then we breathed in as we slowly moved one bead to the other end of the pipe cleaner, matching movement and breath.

On the exhale, we moved another bead.

We repeated for the remaining beads and then moved the beads back, one by one, to the beginning.

You can also use the breathing beads for encouraging longer breaths by counting to 4 beads per inhale and 4 beads per exhale.

Try it out and let us know how it goes! ❤️
