A Wing and a Chair is a non-profit organization based in Asheville, North Carolina. Our mission is to provide creative moral support to children and adults in the hospital through whimsical decorating of standard issue in-patient and out-patient equipment. Our vision is to create a volunteer moral support network that provides children in the hospital with an opportunity to play an active role in
the personalization of their institutional style in-patient and out-patient equipment to help them better embrace and facilitate recovery. A Wing and a Chair offers children in the hospital who require assistance walking, whether temporarily or otherwise, a morale boost by creatively reimagining the appearance of their hospital equipment including wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and walking boots. Volunteers adhere detachable wings, decoration and other fun, spirited materials to institutional-style equipment as a means to help support the morale and recuperation of children as a reflection of their unique personalities. A Wing and a Chair also provides creative moral support services to local hospitals and clinics by offering unique designs and decoration for in-patient equipment. These uplifting decorations will help boost morale among patients as well as among staff and visitors, offering a dash of whimsy to an environment often perceived as clinical, sterile and often scary, particularly for children. Designs include detachable wings in a variety of models including fairy, bird and dragon, as well as capes and an array of inventive décor and accoutrements such as streamers, stencils, applique jewels, stickers and a variety of other decorative options. A Wing and a Chair provides children with a creative outlet and morale boost to help them better embrace their institutional-style equipment and give them a degree of control over how they present themselves to the world.
