What is Bike Asheville?
We started this page as a clearinghouse for useful transportation information related to bicycles and Asheville. I truly believe bicycles can save the world. The more I read, the more meetings I sit in, the more I discover just how far reaching the positive effects of moving people by bicycle can be.
Besides the most obvious, and most pressing issue of our time, climate change, bicycles can stem the national health and obesity crisis, vastly improve the livability of our city, reduce pollution, and save lives. Investing in safe, protected bicycle infrastructure in Asheville is a fiscally sound strategy to improve traffic in our fine city, but it needs informed, motivated, and involved advocates to succeed. This page is my small contribution to that effort. Please get involved, share knowledge and resources, collaborate and comment.
Imagine your children riding their bicycles to school and to friend’s houses. Imagine being able to hop on your bike and get anywhere in our small city, safely and swiftly, without ever worrying about vehicles. In many ways Asheville is the perfect bicycle city except that it lacks infrastructure. As cyclists and pedestrians I invite you to rally around this cause with me and get things built!
Two excellent ways to get involved are to get plugged in with the excellent advocacy group “Asheville on Bikes” and come to the Asheville Bicycle Pedestrian Task Force meetings.
