T.E.C.H.E. Project The Teche Ecology, Culture & History Education Project is passionate about making Bayou Teche a healthier waterway through action and education. Landry Parish.

The Teche Ecology, Culture and History Education Project started in 2009 in St. Our organization is made up of individuals passionate about making Bayou Teche a healthier waterway for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, boating, tubing and even swimming! Along with aesthetics and recreation, we advocate for improved water quality in the Bayou Teche watershed and Teche-Vermilion basin through the reduction of non-point source pollution. Bayou Teche is on the federal list of impaired waterways because the water quality is so poor it can not support fish and wildlife propagation. By reducing pollution, mainly sewage and run-off, we can help restore habitat. We are are working to make Bayou Teche whole again through action and education about the ecology, culture and history. What started with a small group of people in Arnaudville as an effort to pull debris from the bayou has become a movement championed by communities and volunteers. Private donations helped purchase a motor for our barge, the St. Michael. Volunteer crews led by Dane Thibodeaux andBlake Couvillion work with the public and St. Landry and St. Martin Parish sheriffs offices to pull refrigerators, hot water heaters and other items littering the bayou and the banks. We plan to hold public cleanups regularly and encourage volunteers with motorboats, kayaks and canoes to join us. TECHE Project has relationships with the Tour Du Teche, the Kiwanis Club of Breaux Bridge, Pack and Paddle, Bayou Teche Experience, Bayou Teche Brewery, Bayou Vermilion District, Arnaudville Area and Breaux Bridge Chambers of Commerce, St. Martin Parish governments and sheriffs as well as many of the towns and cities along Bayou Teche. We welcome new programing related to the ecology, culture or history of Bayou Teche. Drop us an email if you are interested in learning how you can create and direct a program about Bayou Teche. The Teche is one of the most historically and culturally significant bayous in Acadiana and we are working to ensure it is protected and celebrated for generations to come.

Meet Nicole Poret, Melanie Francios and Mary Finley of our Trail Feather team. They are hard at work creating the themed bird statue to be mounted on one of our two floating barges for the Shake Your Trail Feather Paddle Parade on October 17. This year our themed bird is the Red Bellied Woodpecker, a common bird seen along Bayou Teche. These woodpeckers are known to peck on trees foraging on hidden ants and bees. So, this year be on the lookout for both the themed bird and its prey (bees and ants) adorning our floats. We hope to see our paddlers dressed in feathers as well, and we plan to award those who get in the spirit by dressing up with prizes. Whether you plan to paddle or just come to the park for our celebration, come in feathers for some fun on the bayou! https://www.techeproject.org/events/shake-your-trail-feather/

It's October now, and it seems like the heat of summer may be behind us. That means it's time to think about dusting off your kayak/canoe and joining the party for the Shake Your Trail Feather Paddle Parade. The long-term weather forecast looks great for October 17, so no excuses not to come paddle with us!

If paddling is not your thing, then dust off those dancing shoes or your favorite lawn chair and come join the celebration at Parc des Ponts. Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band Official Site will be playing from noon-2 p.m. at the park, and there will be lots of activities for kids to enjoy. Just to whet your appetite, here's a picture from a previous Trail Feather fest. There's nothing better than spending a cool fall day on Bayou Teche under a beautiful oak tree listening to some Zydeco music! https://www.techeproject.org/events/shake-your-trail-feather/

In case you missed the first post about our awesome Shake Your Trail Feather Kayak Raffle courtesy of Pack & Paddle, here's another picture. This year, we are excited to be raffling an inflatable kayak. At 35 pounds, this Star Rival Kayak offers you the versatility to transport deflated in a carrying duffle bag. So, if you don't have a kayak transport rack, don't feel like hauling a kayak on your trip, or just want to have a second kayak handy for friends, this inflatable (equipped with portable pump; dog not included) is the answer.

While it is not specifically a paddle board, you can remove the seat or simply stand upright to use it as a paddle board. You can also use it as a handy flat surface to fish from. So many options for this beauty of a kayak, and it can be yours with the purchase of a $5 ticket at Parc des Ponts on October 17! Tickets will be available from noon-2 p.m., when the drawing will take place. You must be present to win, so stick around and enjoy some delicious food from our Teche Cafe and live music by Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band Official Site! https://www.techeproject.org/events/shake-your-trail-feather/
