For the last decade, extreme sports has increased in popularity by ten fold. Skateboarding alone is the 3rd most popular sport in the U.S. But while these recreational activities have grown in demand, the supply has not been met. Skateparks or areas allowable for such activity is still extremely rare compared to the number of Soccer fields and Baseball diamonds (most of which are empty 80% of the
time) available. The younger generation involved in these activities are found in the downtown of cities and smaller towns much like Armada, disrupting the local businesses, this has even been a bigger problem in rural areas where the nearest skatepark is a 40 minute drive. Instead of discouraging such activity, we should channel it to a space specifically designed for Skateboarding and BMX. Skateparks in communities promote this healthy activity that has taken the place of sports that were once high in demand for older generations. The skatepark also serve as a great investment in the future. As the demand rises, so does the value of a community that has a public skatepark.
