Closing those gaps can strengthen food security and livelihoods, especially as climate change reshapes rural life.

At Osupuko Comprehensive School in Transmara West, we joined learners, community members, and stakeholders to commemorate the 2026 International Day of the Girl under the theme, “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights!”

The commemoration provided an opportunity to celebrate girls’ potential, amplify their voices, and reaffirm our shared responsibility to create a world where every girl can learn, lead, and thrive.

Ending child marriage and protecting girls’ rights require sustained commitment beyond a single day of awareness. Families must support girls’ aspirations, schools must provide safe and supportive learning environments, communities must challenge harmful practices, and stakeholders must invest in opportunities that enable girls to reach their full potential.

Building a future where girls are safe, empowered, and able to exercise their rights requires meaningful partnerships, community engagement, and a commitment to lasting change.

When we protect girls’ rights and invest in their potential, we create opportunities that benefit not only individual girls but also families, communities, and future generations.

Every single year, 12 million girls have their childhoods cut short by child marriage. That’s 1 in 5 women globally.

In many communities, this practice goes hand-in-hand with Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM)—two deeply entrenched practices rooted in gender inequality and systemic poverty. But when we protect a girl’s right to stay in school, everything changes. Every extra year of secondary education reduces a girl’s risk of child marriage by 6%.

Ending these harmful practices requires more than just changing laws, it requires supporting the grassroots and global coalitions doing the heavy lifting on the ground every day.

As we commemorate today, we’re joining this year’s call to end child marriage and invest in girls’ rights. We asked our team and girls and young women in our programs one question: what becomes possible when a girl is free from child marriage and free to choose her own future? Their powerful responses are below.

Each year, more than 12 million girls become child brides. In the Kenyan communities where we operate, 50% of girls are married before age 19. Child marriage is sustained by interrelated pressures: poverty, limited access to education and health care, and traditional gender norms that restrict girls’ choices. In some communities, female ge***al mutilation (FGM) is viewed as a necessary prerequisite for marriage.

Because the drivers of child marriage are layered and complex, our solutions must be too. Ending child marriage takes interconnected investments in girls’ education, health and safety, leadership, and economic opportunity, alongside collective action to transform the policies, institutions, and social norms that sustain systemic gender inequality.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 7 adolescents worldwide live with a mental health condition, accounting for 15% of the global disease burden in that age group. When left unaddressed, these conditions follow them into adulthood, leaving a lasting negative impact.

In the communities we serve, access to mental health support is extremely limited. There's often no clinic nearby, no counselor at school, and a culture of stigma that keeps young people from speaking up at all.

That's part of why we built the Kakenya Health and Wellness Center. Our youth-friendly clinic offers mental health support alongside a broad range of other holistic healthcare services to a community that previously had little to no access to any of it.

Saeni is the first girl in her family to attend university.

Growing up as one of ten children, Saeni’s family often struggled to afford school fees and food. A Kakenya’s Dream scholarship beginning in fifth grade helped her continue her education, while health and human rights, mentorship, and leadership programs helped her build confidence and skills for the future.

Growing up, Saeni saw girls around her forced to drop out of school to undergo female ge***al mutilation (FGM) and become child brides. It was the only path she knew, and she believed it would be hers, too.

Instead, she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in gender and development studies at Egerton University, where she recently received the Vice Chancellor’s Merit Award for academic excellence.

Her journey shows what becomes possible when girls have the support and opportunity to shape their own paths, and shine their light onto others.

We partnered with Wezesha Impact to equip trainers with practical entrepreneurship knowledge and skills that they will share with our alumnae and young women interested in entrepreneurship.

The trainers will support young women across Transmara East, Transmara West, Transmara South in Narok County, and Kenyenya in Kisii County.

From identifying business opportunities and developing viable ideas to strengthening financial knowledge, the training will help create pathways from ideas to action.

We are investing in skills that open doors, strengthen livelihoods, and help young women build more economically secure futures.

When skills grow, possibilities grow too.
