BRDP July Featured Project! I chose our 2nd featured project, an untitled duet created with Kimberly Goss in 2014, not only because I love Kim so much, but also because of the ephemeral nature of this particular dance. This video is from a single rehearsal in December of 2014, where we began creating ideas for a new work. Some elements of this duet later made their way into the wall section of Nonetheless, an evening-length piece that we premiered in the Fall of 2015 (pictured above in the banner image - photo by the incredible Sam Polcer), but the initial ideas had changed considerably. However, this first draft, which only existed for a single day in the studio, still stays with me. What is it that lingers there? Perhaps something more is itching to be developed or taken in a new direction. I love the lilt reflected in the music and the movement. I remember that day, which wasn't much different from any other day. It felt good to dance it. It felt sad. It felt like two people along similar trajectories finding a moment to connect along their separate journeys. Special shout-out to Kim for being game for this (and many other) beautiful journeys.
I find it interesting how ideas can morph into something very different over the rehearsal process. Then, after a work is finished, remembering where the initial seeds came from and considering why they were there in the first place. Another special element of this project is seeing "Old Triskelion", where I spent so much time and created so many works over the years, before it moved to its current location in Greenpoint. There is so much nostalgia in seeing this random rehearsal day... we weren't thinking about what we were wearing or about creating a polished, finished project. This was one of those simple moments where we came together to play with new ideas with no added pressure. Things were messy, the video quality isn’t good. I have hours of rehearsal footage from moments like this, but this one keeps tapping me on the shoulder. Perhaps, new ideas are brewing...
