Pentagon Chapter, NSDAR

Pentagon Chapter, NSDAR The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) is a non-profit, non-political, volunteer women's service organization.

The NSDAR Chapter Development Committee suggested the creation of our chapter as a direct response to the devastating events of September 11, 2001. As the concept of our new and unique chapter grew, another dual focus was realized: as a memorial to the recently fallen Patriots of 9/11 and to honor the Pentagon’s history and current works. Although our chapter supports all three tenets of the NSDAR

– Historic Preservation, Education, and Patriotism – these founding principles have led us to focus our efforts on supporting our active-duty and retired military. Founding Date: July 3, 2003

Objectives: Historic Preservation, Education, Patriotism

Moto: God, Home, and Country

Location: Arlington, Virginia

District: V

Membership: The Pentagon Chapter currently has 83 active members. Eligibility for Membership: Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership. DAR defines a “Patriot” as any individual who provided service or direct assistance in achieving America’s independence.

Yesterday, the DAR American History Essay Contest Awards were presented at Seton School, Manassas, by Chapter Chairman Verlinda Keith. She was accompanied by Chapter contest judge Lisa Downing.

Seton seventh graders submitted six essays on the theme of "Lunch with a Signer." Students selected a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, then imagined a meeting and conversation with him over lunch. Five certificates of participation were presented.

Bella Cordova was chosen as the Pentagon Chapter 7th grade winner, with her essay about Charles Carroll of Carrollton, MD. In addition to the Pentagon Chapter contest, Bella's essay won the 7th grade contest at Virginia District V, and Virginia State-wide 7th Grade contest. Bella received Certificates, bronze and silver medals for the Chapter and State contests, as well as a book and stipend from the Chapter in recognition of her accomplishments.

Bella's essay advanced to the DAR Eastern Division Contest, where she won again. Essays from eight Division-level contests compete at the National level. Bella's essay won first place for 7th grade in the National contest. She will be recognized with other Division and National-level contest winners in June 2026, at the annual DAR Continental Congress in Washington, DC.

This is the fifth time an essay from Seton has won State Honors. Bella's essay is the first American History essay sponsored by the Pentagon Chapter to win either the Division or National honors.
