The Jeptha Abbott Chapter, NSDAR, held a Dyslexia Awareness and DAR Service to America Month meeting last Wednesday evening at the Radnor Library. Members wore red in honor of Go Red For Dyslexia, a campaign that aims to raise awareness, eliminate stigma, and showcase the incredible abilities of individuals with dyslexia.

Dr. Yvonne D’Uva Howard, Ph.D., M.S., CCC-SLP/L, C-SLT, an Assistant Professor in the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology Program at Gwynedd Mercy University, and an integrated literacy facilitator for the AIM Institute of Learning and Research, where she trains educators in evidence-based reading and writing practices, was invited to speak. Drawing on her extensive experience and education, she provided valuable insights on identifying and supporting those with dyslexia. Dr. Howard is a member of the board of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the International Dyslexia Association (PBIDA), which is a non-profit organization that champions individuals with dyslexia and all students learning to read. They support families, communities, educators, and related professionals throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware. After her presentation, the chapter made a generous donation to PBIDA to further support their advocacy for individuals with dyslexia.

The meeting also saw the induction of two new members, and the recognition of several women celebrating 40 and 50 years of membership in the DAR.

In honor of DAR Service to America Month, Jeptha Abbott members also packed 40 shoeboxes with school supplies to benefit the Dyslexia Tutoring Program at the Hindman Settlement School. This NSDAR-sponsored school improves lives by addressing critical issues surrounding literacy, food insecurity, and access to traditional arts.

To celebrate 134 years of the DAR’s Service to America and the founding of its National Society on October 11, 1890, Daughters across the country take part in the National DAR Day of Service each year during the month of October. This Service to America initiative encourages members to become involved in community service to discover the rewards of volunteerism, demonstrate the positive volunteer opportunities associated with DAR members, and help make their local communities a better, more friendly place. Thank you, Jeptha Abbott, for your incredible spirit of volunteerism!
