is a non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to rescuing dogs in need, rehabilitating if necessary, and then adopting to approved homes where they will be loved as part of a family while also encouraging responsible pet care and striving to increase awareness of the consequences of pet overpopulation through educational programs and materials. We do not operate from a shelter but rather a

network of foster homes in different areas of the state so it may not always be possible for you to meet more than one of our dogs at a time. While this can be frustrating for a prospective adopter, the foster home setting allows us to better evaluate the dogs' temperaments and help them adjust to family life. We deal primarily with dogs under 30 pounds but will also take in larger dogs if a foster home is available.

🐾 Foster Friday 🐾

One of the most rewarding parts of fostering isn’t teaching a dog something new.

It’s watching them finally realize they don’t have to worry anymore.

The nervous glances become peaceful naps. The uncertainty becomes trust. The constant alertness gives way to comfort.

These photos of Manchas and Millie may not look extraordinary, but to us, they’re a beautiful reminder of what foster homes do every day. They give dogs a safe place to decompress, heal, and learn what it feels like to simply be loved.

Sometimes the biggest rescue victories happen while a dog is sound asleep. ❤️

🐾 Thankful Thursday 🐾

This week, we’re sending a heartfelt thank you to DOGPerfect for selecting Canine Castaways as their dedicated shelter partner for April! 💙

Thanks to the generosity of DOGPerfect and their amazing customers, Melissa and Poppy recently visited the Southside Village location to receive a donation of more than $1,700 for the dogs in our care.

DOGPerfect has always been a wonderful supporter of our local animal welfare community, and we are incredibly grateful for their continued commitment to helping homeless pets find safety, healing, and loving homes.

To everyone who shopped, donated, and helped make this contribution possible: thank you for being part of the village that changes lives, one dog at a time. 🐾

🧬🐾 Woof Wednesday: The Results Are In! 🐾🧬

Yesterday we asked you to guess the breeds of Roo (formerly Frito), Obi (formerly Simba), Sam, and Bagel.

Some of you nailed parts of them. Some of these results left us scratching our heads. We expected Chihuahua in all but we’re pretty sure Chow Chow, Boxer, and Basset Hound weren’t on many bingo cards! 😄

🐶 Roo turned out to have more than 8 breeds in the mix.

🐶 Obi surprised us with the most unusual combo.

🐶 Sam wasn’t a huge surprise…a Chorkie through and through!

🐶 And Bagel? Her family calls her the “Everything Bagel,” and after seeing her results, we completely understand why. She truly is a little bit of everything.

🌟 Captain Sully is ready for his next adventure. 🌟

Sully has been waiting for his forever family since May 2024.

Like many rescue dogs, he can be shy when facing something new. In fact, when he first arrived at his foster home, he wasn’t quite sure what to think. But within a week, Sully realized he was safe, loved, and finally able to let his guard down.

And that’s when his true personality emerged.

Sully loves playing with his foster brothers and sisters, carrying around his favorite soft toys, going for walks, running in the yard, attending birthday parties, cuddling with his people, and relaxing with his friends. At night, his favorite place is curled up on the bed next to his foster human, though he’s perfectly content in his crate too.

His foster family says he gets along “pretty dog gone well” with their pack of four dogs and has become a happy, well-rounded companion. While he can be a little cautious with new people, especially men, patience and kindness quickly win him over.

The truth is, Sully isn’t looking for perfection.

He’s simply looking for someone willing to give him a chance.

After all this time, Captain Sully’s greatest wish is still waiting to come true:
