PRESS RELEASE 4/22/21
For Immediate Release
From: The Appomattox County Historical Society
Concerning the Appomattox Oyster & Seafood Festival
The Appomattox County Historical Society held its annual Appomattox Oyster & Seafood Festival at DeVault Family Vineyards on Saturday, April 17, 2021 from 11a-6pm. We would like to thank the DeVault Family for coming to our rescue when our own venue, Clover Hill Village, developed drainage problems and we were about to cancel the event for the 2nd year in a row. The COVID Pandemic forced us to cancel the event in 2019, putting the Society, like everyone else, into a financial belt tightening in order to stay afloat without revenue coming in. Upon hearing this, we were contacted by the DeVaults who offered their awesome venue to us so that we may continue to hold our event, thus giving us the opportunity to restore funding to our group and also giving the public the opportunity to get out of their COVID funk, enjoy the outdoors; get together with friends and relatives; and enjoy a festival and all it had to offer! Without them, we would have had to endure another year without the fundraising ability to keep our facilities open and continue to collect, preserve and display Appomattox County historical artifacts and documents for the viewing public.
When the call went out for volunteers to help with security, parking, medical care and everything else that runs behind the scenes of every event, the Appomattox County Militia stepped up and volunteered to cover these positions. This community-oriented group has been working hard to make sure that Appomattox residents and businesses are given the opportunities to succeed, volunteering for various jobs while raising money to purchase much needed equipment to donate to the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Department, trying to keep deputies and residents safer. We appreciate the Militia members for all they do and for helping us out.
Some school bus drivers from Appomattox, continued their tradition of helping out with the front gate and miscellaneous jobs that needed to be done.
All of these volunteers were very much appreciated for their efforts, and everyone involved should be congratulated for what they contributed to help the Society raise enough funds to continue operations for the upcoming year!
Finally, and not the least, we would like to thank our vendors, musicians and attendees who are the backbone of any event! We appreciate that you came out despite the current climate of lockdowns, and you took a chance with our event to have a good time and reintroduce yourselves back into society.
Thank you all!

I'm so glad to hear that the Appomattox Oyster & Seafood Festival had no bearing whatsoever on the cancellation of the upcoming event at DeVault Vineyards next weekend!
I don't blame them for not allowing an event that did not ensure a safe, secure environment, and the necessary compliance to protect the attendees and the Vineyard itself. DeVault Vineyards, although supporting the Appomattox County Historical Society's OysterFest immensely, and being great friends as well, still required us to have everything in place prior to the event. We were required to obtain County permits, Health permits, VDOT permits, insurance, ABC permits, etc that required a lot of time and effort, but it is what needs to be done in order to be in compliance.
It's a shame that this event couldn't come together, because as we found out with ours, people are READY to get out and have fun! We had to close our gate sales due to the enormous turnout and we wish we were able to allow everyone who arrived on site to come in and enjoy themselves.
I know, that when DeVault Vineyards runs their own event, they have everything in place to keep their events legal, because anything less would jeopardize their ABC license, their business, and more importantly, their reputation.
