If you are interested in learning more about how insects help us in our landscapes and how we can do more to support their work....please join us tonight at our monthly Marion Big Scrub meeting at 6 pm at the Belleview Public Library. I think you will learn a lot and you might even enjoy yourself at the same time! ;-) The program is called Beneficial Insects and Native Plants: The Keys to a Sustainable Landscape.

I will be giving my program tonight on Beneficial Insects and the importance of planting native plants to support them. In this program, I generally focus on predators and parasitoids of other insects in your landscape...like this little Predatory Stink Bug that I caught in the garden feasting on a weevil. But insects perform a lot of ecological services...pollination, recycling nutrients, improving soil quality, decomposition, and more. And with insect populations crashing around the globe, it wold behoove us all to understand and appreciate the insects that share our landscapes and do much more to protect and support them. Marion Big Scrub meets at 6pm tonight at the Belleview Public Library. If you live in the area, please join us.

Take a bit of time and give this NPR piece a listen. Declining insect populations are an important topic and this program begins to help you understand why. It will also give you a couple of tips on where to start to help support insect populations in your own area...by firstly, of course, planting native plants. Give it a listen....

Insects are dying. And that’s terrible news for humans.
