Today we observe Purple Heart Day, recognizing the recipients of the Purple Heart, the oldest U.S. military decoration still awarded to service members.

Originally established by General George Washington as the Badge of Military Merit on August 7, 1782, the award was revived in 1932 as the Purple Heart. Today, it is presented to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who are wounded or killed in action while serving our nation.

Today, we honor the courageous women of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), whose service during World War II helped shape the future of military aviation.

More than 1,000 civilian women answered the call to serve by flying military aircraft, testing planes, towing targets, and ferrying aircraft across the country, freeing male pilots for combat duty.

On August 4, we honor the founding of the U.S. Coast Guard, established in 1790 as the Revenue Marine Service by Alexander Hamilton.
