We adore this Anoka-Hennepin family. If you're around Nov. 21st, they could use a hand. Looks like you could bring your kiddos to help, too.

We are in need of a little help from our community!

Lucas is still sharpening, often the bags that Little Brother brings home from his own school. Or the unusable ones we call “misfits”. He loves using his drill on those.

As I’ve shared before, Lucas is working in the school library. He absolutely loves it and I’m so grateful for the librarian who has helped him gain some independence and job skills. His library job is the perfect set up for sharpening and distributing.

We have bins of pencils that need to go into circulation. I’ve never turned down a donation, partly because I hate to see perfectly good pencils be thrown away. With life becoming so busy, I haven’t sorted in a while and that presents a problem. We’d like to get these pencils out for use and in turn Lucas sharpening them too.

I need help with The Great Pencil Sort! And I thought what better way to do that is to ask our amazing community here! I’ve this a few times with some smaller groups and it was amazing.

The Great Pencil Sort
Rum River Library, Anoka MN
Meeting Room A & B
Saturday November 21st 1-4:45 pm

Instructions will be given and the tasks are very simple! I would be happy to sign volunteer logs too. We’ll have snacks and drinks and maybe the pencil sharpener himself will make an appearance!

How old will your kids be the next time they get a Saturday Halloween?

Formula: Current age + 11 years = ??

We're tired, BUT we're going to give our kids a Halloween to remember! Let them stay up late, eat all the candy, and watch the scary movies.

Because they grow up wayyy too fast!

In 1970, U.S. schools educated only one in five children with disabilities.

That changed because parents, people with disabilities, advocates, and communities organized and demanded something better.

They fought in courtrooms. They pushed lawmakers. They protested. They refused to accept a system that said some children simply did not belong in public schools.

Those rights were not handed to us. People organized for them.

When we organize around public education, we are part of a long history of ordinary people deciding that our schools can and should do better for our kids.

Progress is possible. But it has never happened by accident.

The last court ordered school desegregation in the United States happened in 2016.

And what may be even more shocking is that there are still school desegregation cases making their way through the courts today.

It is easy to look back at major changes in our country and think progress was inevitable.

It wasn’t.

People organized. Families spoke up. Communities fought for change. They kept pushing, sometimes for decades, even when the system resisted them.

That is how change happens.

The problems we face in public education today are different, but the lesson is the same: progress does not happen because we wait for someone else to fix things.

It happens when ordinary people organize and decide things can be better.

We love Anoka! Highlighting this city during the spooky season just seems like the right thing to do!
