The Anniston Lions Club has been awarded Nonprofit of the Year at the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Awards — and what an honor for a club that continues to show up, serve, and make a difference in our community.

From helping neighbors in need to supporting local programs, vision services, food efforts, and community outreach, our Lions don’t just talk about service — they live it.

Congratulations to EVERY Anniston Lion who has helped carry the mission forward. This award is a reflection of the heart, time, and commitment poured into Calhoun County.

Anniston Lions Club donates to Calhoun Baptist Association Service Center. The Anniston Lions Club supports Lions Clubs International goal to provide food collection and distribution in our community. We do this in support of the Calhoun County Baptist Service Center in Anniston. Through our support, we are able to provide dry goods and canned goods to people in Calhoun County who could not afford it otherwise. Anniston Lions Director Dennis Dunn presents a check to Baptist Service Center Director, Janice Scheitlin.

For 15 years, Lion James Askew, has been the driving force behind our annual pecan sales. Thanks to his incredible dedication, organization, and hard work of the club members, this fundraiser has raised approximately $150,000! Every single dollar of that has gone directly back into supporting vital projects and neighbors right here in our community. Lion James has decided to step down as the Pecan Fundraiser Chairman. Don't worry, Lion Alan Rutherford, is taking over this volunteer position, along with Lion Rhonda Kline's husband, Dale Kline, who has agreed to be co-chair. Pecans will arrive as always in time for the holiday season.

Lion James, you have truly embodied our motto, "We Serve."

May is Mental Awareness Month.

One of the biggest barriers to mental health care is stigma. Many people grow up hearing messages that encourage them to “push through,” “stay strong,” or avoid talking about their emotions. These beliefs can make it difficult to ask for help, even when support is needed.

Stigma may look like:

Feeling embarrassed about struggling emotionally

Worrying others will judge you for going to therapy

Believing mental health challenges are a personal failure

Minimizing emotional pain because “others have it worse”

Mental Health Awareness Month helps challenge these misconceptions by promoting education, empathy, and honest conversations. The more we normalize discussing mental health, the easier it becomes for individuals to access care without fear or shame.
