Food Gatherers, (one of the more recent recipients of our donations) celebrates Mother Earth today and every day with many eco-conscious practices built into their daily operations
With nearly 40% of the food supply wasted annually in the U.S., they understand the important social responsibility of diverting food from landfills, while saving as much as possible to help eliminate hunger. That’s why they rescue 9,000 pounds of food daily!
The food they receive, whether donated to them or rescued from grocery stores, is sorted according to health and safety guidelines to ensure it’s safe for our neighbors to eat. The food that can’t be saved for human consumption is composted through their partnership with My Green Michigan and is converted into rich soils for agriculture.
Since food isn’t the only waste they see, Food Gatherers partners with Recycle Ann Arbor to recycle cardboard, packaging, and even soft plastics. They also have their warehouse lit entirely by energy-efficient LED bulbs, and more than half of our energy consumption is solar powered!
