Today, June 19th, marks 161 years since the emancipation of enslaved African American people in the United States. Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced the executive decree that the 250,000 enslaved people in the state were now free. The day is one of celebration across the country and serves as a call for joy. The first annual celebration was titled “Jubilee Day,” and in the following decades, Juneteenth celebrations featured music, barbecues, prayer services, and other activities.
