Inspiring Women of Iowa Inspiring Advocate for Women Award Finalist: Christy Harmon
CEO & Founder, Chic Behavioral Health & Community Services
“Christy is an exceptional advocate for young women and a leader who has transformed youth programming across the metro. A few years ago, she founded a nonprofit dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive space for youth who identify as female, focusing on mental health, self-esteem, confidence building, and prevention.
Christy leads with authenticity. Her qualifications are rooted in lived experience, professional expertise, trauma-informed training, and an unwavering commitment to showing up authentically for youth. What sets her apart is the way she combines all of these strengths into practical, effective, and deeply human programming. Christy demonstrates a rare ability to reach young women in a way that feels genuine, safe, and empowering. She doesn’t rely solely on curriculum; she builds meaningful connections that allow students to grow in confidence and emotional awareness. Her ability to adapt programming to different schools and communities also sets her apart. Christy has facilitated groups at Des Moines Public Schools, Ankeny Schools, and multiple Boys & Girls Club locations. Each with different cultures and needs. She tailors her approach to the students in front of her, ensuring each group feels relevant, age-appropriate, and emotionally accessible.
What makes Christy truly exceptional is the way she leads by example. She models vulnerability, boundary-setting, communication, and resilience. She teaches young women how to build confidence, advocate for themselves, and navigate challenges with resilience. She listens without judgment, celebrates their strengths, and helps them recognize their worth, often becoming the trusted adult many have needed. Students regularly express that she is the first adult who made them feel genuinely heard. Parents and school staff consistently share stories about the positive changes they see in girls who participate in her groups. Her dedication extends far beyond facilitating groups. She collaborates with schools and community organizations, advocates for mental health resources, and works to maintain sustainable programming so these groups can continue to thrive. Her leadership has already shaped the lives of countless young women, and her impact continues to grow each year. Christy is a kind, genuine, and influential leader who makes every young person she encounters feel heard, valued, and capable. She is not only serving young women, but also shaping a generation of confident, supported, emotionally aware leaders.”
