Here in Northeast we have storytelling conferences, a mix of workshops and performance. Down south this is the beginning of storytelling festival season where people just sit back and enjoy a stream of story washing over them making the laugh, gasp and tear up.
I had the immense pleasure of not only going but being a participant (New Voice) in Woodruff, SC Stone Soup Storytelling Festival. So many best parts:
Meeting and listening to tellers I’ve only come across in zoom-land;
The variety of stories (folktale, tall tale, original, personal narrative and some with not able to peg into one genre);
Seeing NH storytelling pal and legend Papa Joe Storytelling;
The warmth of hospitality immediately making me feel like a friend;
Yes, being able to stand up and tell my adaptation of a Ukrainian folktale to a new audience (every audience changes the telling);
Got a prize y’all - came in 3rd in New Voices;
And, taking a jaunt to Asheville, NC before going home (I’ll be back!).
Many, many gratitudes to the organizers and emcees who made this festival flow.
