Today Seward Fire took part in a joint operation with the Air National Guard pararescuemen to reach and help an injured patient who was stuck in Day Harbor due to weather and challenging seas with 10’ swells and battering winds.

Due to the severity of the weather, utilizing a helicopter was not possible so a response began using the Fire Rescue Boat John Foster.

We have been diligently working towards an integrated Advanced Life Support response and we were able to put those skills and equipment to work as we tried to look for a weather window to extract the patient. We were able to evaluate, stabilize the patient, give pain control measures, and extract the patient safely and efficiently back through the rough seas.

Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported us with training and support. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without you.

And a special shoutout to Engineer Jason Harrington for proving rough seas don’t mean anything with him at the helm!

Nearly 21 flight hours. Six aircraft. Four lives saved. Two days. One mission.

Over the Fourth of July weekend, the Alaska National Guard Rescue community answered the call, executing four complex rescue missions across some of the nation's most unforgiving terrain.

Over the next several months we’ll be doing a series highlighting the units that make up the 176th Wing of Alaska’s Air National Guard and the ways Archangel is supporting them. Originally created as Alaska Pararescue Association, you will see a transition to Archangel throughout 2026 to better reflect our mission to support all of those at the 176th Wing supporting or operating in Rescue.
