Darling Christina may have a “look” that is familiar. Could it be her markings, her eyes or maybe it is her ears. Sweet girl came to us from Dutch Harbor and over the years we have taken in several kitties and they have the DH features, which are absolutely adorable.

Purrecious Christina is as shy as can be, however she has really started to become more comfortable and sharing her purrsonality! She is a huge fan of playing with an assortment of cat toys, loves to toss around her catnip (especially if they are Yeoww) and boxes are her favorite place to purrch. She absolutely loves to play with so many toys! She is very food motivated and when she knows you, she relaxes so beautifully. She has had some interactions with our other cats and she has been so brave! We take transitions very seriously as we want to ensure the cat who is doing the transition and the other cats all feel safe and secure.

Christina, while cautious with people, has a very laid back cattitude towards the other cats she sees. She is very curious, inquisitive and is definitely showing interest in engaging. We are so looking forward to helping her have fun times with our other feline friends, or even better choosing a loving home that will be patient with her needs and understand that shy cats take time, but are so worth the wait.

Please understand when we share that our cats are very shy, we are being very transparent about their needs. Shy does not just mean that they may hide from you when you come to visit, it means they may be very uncomfortable with a new person/people. This may cause them to retreat or freeze. We ask that you please be very mindful of this and understand that it will take time to build a relationship with them. Please do not impose on their space and implement strategies that our Behavior Team can share with you. If you are truly interested in adopting one or more of our shyer cats, we strongly encourage you to do multiple visits and work with our Behavior Team. This may give you the opportunity to see sprinkles of their beautiful personalities that they share with those they trust.

Sweet Lucia is our exotic dancer who will entice you with her gigantic polydactyl paws of love as she grabs onto the pole and pounces on the peacock feather. She is picturesque, elegant and quite sophistiCATed.

Lucia came to us many years ago after being live trapped outdoors. She was terribly shy when she first came to us, however thanks to our wonderful volunteers, Lucia has continued to come out of her shell, however will definitely need a home that will be patient and work at her pace.

When she sees you taking out the peacock feather or the laser light toy she will wake from her kitty slumber to join in the fun! She loves to wrap her giant mitts around the poles and capture the feather like a fierce hunter. Lucia is a very independent gal and would be very purrleased to have a home of her own. She co-habitates with her companions in our Shy Cat Room, but prefers her own space.

If you are interested in adopting Lucia, you will need to be accompanied by one of our Cat Behavior Expurrts to meet her. After you meet her and feel she is a good match, everyone who is in the home will need to have a second visit with our Adoption and Care Coordinator to see the interaction. Once we see that you are a purrfect match, then the adoption application can be completed and our processing team will get to work. Our Care Coordinator will counsel you on how to set up your home to meet the needs of your new addition.

Sweet Buddy is thriving in his ameowzing foster home and this makes all of us infinitely happy. Buddy had been at our shelter since 2017 and was labeled a challenge. It took years of positive behavior shaping, lots of encouraging volunteers and then finally this loving foster home to help Buddy shed that image. Buddy has been with them since April and he has blossomed so beautifully.

The foster home and our Care Coordinator chatted about if getting Buddy a feline companion would be good for Buddy and who would be the best fit. At the shelter Buddy had a hard time building relationships with the cats, only because he craved a loving, peaceful companion. We discussed finding a younger cat that Buddy could mentor, help to guide and sure enough that was the magical fit!

Buddy and Jelly have become a dynamic duo and the best of friends as the foster home utilized suggested transition steps to help him learn to accept her and see she is there to be his best "buddy."

Buddy still rules the roost, but he is elated to have a feline friend he can snuggle with, play with and has helped his inner kitten shine through.

We hope these photos of Buddy living his best life helps put a smile on all of our volunteers hearts and everyone can see the remarkable and wonderful life our shelter cats have in and out of the shelter.

A big thank you to Buddy’s wonderful foster home. They are wonderful communicators and have given Buddy so much, we are furever grateful.

To help our cats transition within our shelter we do it in stages to help ensure they feel safe and secure. Sly Daddy and Roman were in one of our Transition Rooms after their quarantine period. Then when it was time we started the transition to our Main Floor by implementing steps that worked around their comfort zone.

Our shelter is unique in that we have open, catified areas that provide the cats with enough space to wander, explore, zoom and have their own areas to retreat to when they need their own space.

To help cats like Sly Daddy and Roman transition we start by expanding their area incrementally and monitor their reaction/behaviors etc. Sessions are short in the beginning and build over time and we end each time on a positive note to ensure they feel confident and comfortable with the process. For the first few weeks they would go back into their room, get their favorite treat and the door is closed. The other aspect of the transition process is ensuring the other cats on the Main Floor and the boys show they can successfully cohabitate. When it is observed that they are comfortable being out of the room and are no longer using it to retreat to, we close the door so we can get it cleaned and prepped for the next transition!

This requires a team effort from all of our volunteers. Each night if time allowed, the boys had some time out.

These photos and videos shared by many of our ameowzing volunteers show the process and the final result is Sly Daddy and Roman transitioned to our Main Floor purrfectly. They are waiting for their purrfect home together as they are a package deal!

We love the time and love our ameowzing volunteers invest in our shelter. Catering to the needs of our shyer cats is one of our strongest attributes. We love seeing these positive and outgoing interactions from our cats from volunteers especially after cleaning! A big thank you to Autumn and Michael, these two volunteers definitely have the cool cat vibes!

From Autumn and Michael,
“Today we helped clean the shy cat room, and once we finished cleaning we quietly sat with the cats. Once we felt they were comfortable with us, we slowly introduced the peacock feather to interact with the cats. Several cats perked up, watching and following the feather. Once we saw everyone was enjoying the peacock feather we tried the feather toy and everyone decided to come down and play or watch!”

Now let’s see who can name the cats in the post! Go 🏁!

Are you ready to fall in love, because darling Uno will make that suPURR easy for you. This darling tuxie lad recently came to us from one of our rescue partners, Anchorage Animal Care and Control. If you can believe it, Uno was at their shelter since the end of May. He was a stray that was never claimed. There they took wonderful care of him, got him neutered and tested for FeLV/FIV (he is negative).

How is it possible this dynamic sweetheart who will literally melt your heart as you caress his head in your hand not make the purrfect connection?

Uno is going to our fab vet, VCA Bering Sea this Friday for his intake exam. Once we get some baseline information we will share that. Uno’s estimated DOB is 6/18/2017.

If you are looking for an older, gentle love muffin, with a heart shaped nose, he will be your numero Uno!

Sweet Ross-a-muffin has been at our shelter since 2020. He is a tender, gentle fellow who is more of a wallflower. A few months ago he was diagnosed with a condition called Pillowfoot which requires several months of treatment to help it go into remission. Therefore one of our volunteers took Ross home to provide him with the medical care he needs and a loving environment. This video is of Ross today, having so much fun!! He went to the vet on Tuesday for his second recheck and he still needs further treatment, but is making lots of progress. He started his new treatment this morning and as you can see, he is doing very well!

Ross’ DOB: is 11/17/2018
He is also Pre-CKD (Renal Disease) so he is being monitored closely and getting lots of loving support.

Aren't I a beautiful and sophisiCATed torbie gal?
"Hi, my name is Simba and I have been a resident at AHS since 9/13/22 after my previous owner passed away. I'll be honest, losing my owner and adjusting to living at the shelter was scary and I hid a lot. After a few months of learning to trust the volunteers and my other kitty comrades, I started venturing out for affection. Today you can frequently find me first in line to play (I really love the kitty fishing pole) and I love a good soft head scratch. My volunteers say they are really proud of how far I have come and that they can't wait for the day I find my forever home." Bio purrfectly crafted by our Young Purrson Repurrsentative, Dalton!
Simba is also a fan of laps and if you are willing to open yours to a shy but trusting sweetheart, then she will be the one for you!
