Rural CAP Senior Companion Program As part of AmeriCorps Seniors, this program enables Alaskans 55+ to volunteer by providing companionship and assisting older adults with everyday tasks.

Volunteers receive training and a small stipend. A part of the AmeriCorps Seniors Program, our volunteers assist other seniors in their communities who need social engagement and support with daily activities, helping them live independently for as long as possible. This includes visiting with seniors in their home, driving seniors to purchase groceries, helping with internet tasks and more. Many seniors today face isolation and loneliness. Both the volunteer and the senior receiving help benefit from this valuable connection.

Dawn Greenway is a Senior Companion Volunteer from Ruby, AK. Dawn signed up to be a volunteer because she loves being around people and doing fun things. So far, she and her client have enjoyed playing pan, cutting fish, sharing meals at the elder's luncheon, picking berries and taking rides. What Dawn enjoys most is listening to stories and spending quality time. She says the elders really appreciate visiting, and plans to have an elderly luncheon so all the elders can gather together and enjoy each other's company. Dawn is thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the senior companion program, as it has encouraged her to be more involved with the community and elders.

Connecting Rural Elders to resources in Southeast!
Joylin in Hydaburg is building community and providing transportation for Elders in Hydaburg where access to food and health related resources is extremely limited. As a senior companion volunteer Joylin connects Elders to activities such as the Craig Tribal Association’s monthly uncheon, visits to the clinic, grocery store, or community events that allow Elders to connect with relatives and friends in the region.. Joylin reflects that the time in the car with Elders is also meaningful to her as she gets to spend time with one Elder who is the last fluent Haida speaker.

This past year we had 58 Elder Mentors and 13 Senior Companion volunteers serve throughout Alaska. Volunteers serve a minimum of 5 hours per week.

Some of our host sites included:
Kodiak Area Native Association
Fairbanks Senior Center
Anchorage School District
Lower Yukon School District
Lower Kuskokwim School District
Kodiak Head Start
Kwethluk Head Start
Hospice of Homer
Mentasta Lake
Chaputnguak School

The Elder Mentor program mentored 1,439 youth and the Senior Companion program provided services to over 65 Alaskan Seniors. With 35 sites in total served. Volunteers served a total of 28,267 service hours!

Elder Mentors serve as one-on-one mentors in classrooms or as culture bearers passing down indigenous knowledge and languages to youth.

Senior Companion volunteers provided services in three main areas: Transportation, Companionship, and Respite Care. Volunteers may visit seniors in their homes, provide rides to appointments or meet with seniors in public spaces. See less

Meet one of our amazing Rural CAP Senior Companion Program Volunteer Coordinators!
This is Ashley Snyder and she is in Ketchikan, AK. Here's what Ashley has to say about why she accepted this position and what she enjoys about doing it.

I was excited to accept this position because I believe in the power of connection, the importance of our older adults, and because I wanted to meet like-minded people here in Ketchikan, as I am new to town. I’ve enjoyed connecting with elders of all kinds here in Ketchikan, Saxman, Kake and more during my time with CAP and sharing berry picking stories and recipes.

I’m a berry picker from way back! I grew up in the fertile farmlands and prairies of rural Texas and every spring I would pick bags of dewberries, these delicious blackberry-like berries that grow in dense, brambly spots so my mom could make me a dewberry cobbler for my birthday. Oh, to go back in time and spend a sunny afternoon picking berries and playing in creeks with my brother again!

Seniors having a delicious lunch and a fun afternoon together!!

We had a great time at the Haines Senior Center while we enjoyed our delicious, homemade lunch. Then a few stuck around and painted planter pots. We shared stories, laughed and admired each other's creativity. It was a wonderful afternoon.
