Captain Josiah Crosby Chapter NH DAR

Several chapter members had the privilege of planning and participating with the Mont Vernon America 250! committee and the NHSAR to honor 11 patriots buried in the town's Greenlawn cemetery, 9 of whom are not listed on the war memorial. 2nd Vice Regent, Kim led The American's Creed, gave opening remarks and closed with a Benediction. Corresponding Secretary, Susan was invited to unveil the marker of patriot Calvin Smith in whose home she now lives.

Calvin Smith is a survivor of the Battle of Bunker Hill having served 8 months in 1775 under the command of Capt Abisha Brown in Col. John Nixon Regiment and in the Continental 4th Regiment of Foot 2 company Capt Adam Wheeler, Col Thomas Nixon as sergeant from Sept 1 1776 to Mach 15, 1777.

It was a wonderful event and we look forward to continued collaboration with the towns we serve and the NHSAR!

Happy Flag Day!

In 1777, the Second Continental Congress stated America must have an official flag to represent the nation and its' people. That same day, which happened to fall on June 14th, a design for the flag was approved. That all accomplished it would still be over 130yrs before Flag Day first became a holiday.

June 14, 1916 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation officially establishing June 14 as our annual Flag Day.
May 7, 1937, Pennsylvania became the first official state to declare Flag Day an official state holiday.
August 3, 1949, Congress approved the national observance of Flag Day, finally putting it all into motion.

Please remember there are a few standard protocols that must be observed when displaying, handling or disposing of our US Flag. This information is easily available online or can be found in pamphlet form through any DAR chapter. Also known as Women Veterans Recognition Day, it commemorates the anniversary of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, signed by President Harry S. Truman on June 12, 1948, which officially enabled women to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Our chapter is proud to acknowledge two of our members who did just that. Judith Jones, Marines, Captain and Kim Gowell, Navy, Lieutenant served in their respective branches and now serve as valued Daughters in our fortunate chapter. We are grateful for you ladies and all you bring to our efforts to follow the objectives of all DAR chapters.

The count down continues! On June 11, 1776, the Continental Congress selects Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Roger Sherman of Connecticut and Robert R. Livingston of New York to draft a declaration of independence. They would come to be known as the Committee of Five.

Early Flag Day celebrations at the General John Stark House was the theme of our last meeting before the summer break.

We honed our flag folding skills, learned about the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the words that would become the "Star Spangled Banner" and painted patriotic themed rocks to spread America 250! cheer in the towns we serve. Special thanks to Trish and Hans Jackson who opened the house to us and gave a tour and history of the place. Later several of us followed Trish to Stark Park to see the family's burial ground. We all had a wonderful time!

It starts today - countdown to the Declaration of Independence! 📜🪶

Nearly 160,000 Allied troops landed on Normandy 82 years ago today. Just counting our Americans there were 8,230 either killed, wounded, missing in action or captured. The largest amphibious invasion in history cost many their loved ones. Let’s pause with grace and feel such gratitude for all who fought so valiantly.

U.S. Flag Chair Marsha Caswell had the pleasure of presenting Amherst resident Marie Grella with a well-deserved DAR Flag Certificate today. This special honor is awarded to businesses, groups, and individuals who consistently uphold proper flag protocol through correct placement, observance of designated half-staff days, and education on flag use and care. Marie embodies these ideals beautifully in Amherst. Her steadfast devotion to the community’s flags is both remarkable and inspiring. Among her many patriotic contributions, she makes sure our chapter receives 50 Betsy Ross flags each year so we can continue the meaningful tradition of placing them on the graves of every known Revolutionary War soldier in Amherst’s four cemeteries before Memorial Day. We are incredibly grateful for Marie’s dedication and proud to recognize her outstanding commitment to honoring and respectfully displaying the American flag in one of the five communities we serve.

Each Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country, whose courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Our chapter is privileged to be part of the wreath laying ceremonies at all war memorials in Milford and to speak words that honor those who were first in service to our country, securing the liberties we cherish today.
