Teresa, member of Altrusa of Ames, serves with honor as a member of the Nurse Honor Guard for our local hospital.

A Nurse Honor Guard is a group of volunteer nurses who provide a special tribute at the funeral or memorial service of a nurse. Dressed in traditional nursing attire, they may recite the Nightingale Tribute, light a lamp or candle, place a white rose near the nurse, ring a bell to symbolize the nurse’s final shift, or formally announce the nurse is “released from duty.” The Honor Guard begins the ceremony with their cape open to their hearts, then close their cape when the service is over.

It is a beautiful way to honor the compassion, dedication, and service a nurse gave throughout their career.

We are proud of Teresa for continuing to serve others in such a thoughtful and meaningful way.

Altrusa of Ames member, Judi, volunteered with Food at First to help serve a nourishing hot meal to individuals and families in Story County.

Food at First serves more than 100 meals each day, seven days a week, to anyone in need. Through partnerships with local grocers, bakeries, restaurants, gardeners, and produce growers, safe, surplus food is rescued and redirected to our community rather than going to waste.

Judi was grateful for the opportunity to lend a helping hand and be part of an effort that provides both food and dignity to our neighbors.

Altrusans change lives, one act of service at a time! 💚

Deanna has enjoyed volunteering at the Iowa State Fair in different areas because it is a fun place to volunteer. She, her son, and daughter worked together in several areas—the Iowa State University booth, Fine Arts Department, Cultural Center, plus the Blue Ribbon Foundation Bingo and Museum Gift Shop.

For three generations, Deanna’s family has volunteered at the fair. They love the opportunity to learn new things while supporting an Iowa tradition. And, of course, enjoying all the fair food makes everything more fun! 🎡 🐄 🐖 🌽 🎪

Altrusans continue making a difference wherever they serve. 💚

Marisue’s background in Youth Development and Volunteer Management is why she took a position with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H in 2005. She was responsible for 4-H youth development in a multi county area. Even after retirement, her commitment to 4-H continues!

Today, she volunteers at the Iowa State Fair as a department superintendent, judge liaison, and evening superintendent—answers questions, supports fair volunteers, assists with 4-H projects, displays, and ribbon placings, maintains building security and makes sure everything runs smoothly.

It is people like Marisue who help make the Iowa State Fair a special event! Her dedication to 4-H, young people, and service is a wonderful example of how Altrusans continue making a difference wherever they serve. 💚

Since 1996, Altrusa of Ames has planted and cared for a city garden at Inis Grove Park. Our club’s service committee, designs, chooses the plants, and with the help of club members plants the garden each spring. The plants are donated by Holub Greenhouses of Ames. Initially, the garden looked terrific. Unfortunately, park critters decided to snack on some of the plants, to our dismay. Altrusa member Mary and her husband Steve saved the day by donating plants from their greenhouses in Gilbert, Shamrock Acres Greenhouses, to re-beautify the garden.
