Nearly every single weekend you will find our volunteers sparking conversations in front of pet stores that sell puppies. Just two weeks ago Lauren from our Colorado team was able to get a customer to pause their purchase and do more research before they buy. The person had driven specifically to the store to get a yorkie, but Lauren was ready with our research and was able to have a conversation with this person about pet adoption and humane ways to get a puppy. No puppy was sold that day and even more people learned about puppy mills!

We all know someone who has bought a puppy- whether that is a neighbor, a coworker, a friend, a family member (or even ourselves!) We can't cut those people out of this discussion, when those are the ones who need to know how to avoid puppy mills the most.

We are at the beginning of prime puppy-buying season and we need you to have these conversations with those in your life who are looking for a new companion. You can encourage adoption and help them see all of the amazing animals that are in shelters and rescues first by looking at Petfinder or AdoptAPet! But for those who are unwilling or unable to adopt, please kindly talk with them about the importance of doing their research before they buy.

Share our nonprofit with them and let them know that we are here to help them avoid falling for a puppy mill, a predatory loan, or an outright scam where the puppy doesn't even exist.

Talking about buying puppies isn't a comfortable conversation for so many of us, but that is why Bailing Out Benji is here to help and we will do it with kindness and compassion. We want to stop people before they support an inhumane facility but we need your help reaching them!

Have you seen our new licensed breeder search engine! Advocates and the public can finally do their research with a few easy clicks.

We are thrilled to announce our new search engine that allows the public, advocates, and policymakers to instantly do their research into licensed dog breeders across the country! The online search tool is a companion to our database where we are currently tracking 4,445 licensed dog and cat breeders, as well as thousands of unlicensed facilities and canceled licenses.

Why is this important? Because our unique research shows that:

[41%] of the licensed breeders we are tracking have state or federal violations in the last 5 years.

[36%] of the licensed breeders who supplied pet stores in the last three years had state or federal violations.

[42%] of the licensed breeders we have found to be supplying online brokering websites had state or federal violations.

It is often easier for the public to find a puppy mill or inhumane breeder than a responsible one! While inspection records only show one part of an operation, until now it was nearly impossible for anyone to access state records or even know how to access the USDA. We want our search engine to be one tool in the toolbox in the fight to end puppy mills by helping consumers make responsible purchases.
