December is prime puppy-buying season and we need your help reaching customers BEFORE they buy! If we can educate them about puppy mills and humane ways to get new pets, we will end this cruel industry once and for all.

Our nonprofit has created the largest database of licensed breeders (and how they sell!) in the country. We are tracking 5,000 licensed breeders and more than 50,000 unlicensed puppy-sellers across the country, so we can answer questions from advocates and potential puppy-buyers!

Puppy buying season is upon us. Use the links below for tips on finding a reputable breeder and how to avoid supporting inhumane puppy mills. Please think Benji before you buy!

We all know someone who has bought a puppy- whether that is a neighbor, a coworker, a friend, a family member (or even ourselves!) We can't cut those people out of this discussion, when those are the ones who need to know how to avoid puppy mills the most.

We are at the beginning of prime puppy-buying season and we need you to have these conversations with those in your life who are looking for a new companion. You can encourage adoption and help them see all of the amazing animals that are in shelters and rescues first by looking at Petfinder or AdoptAPet! But for those who are unwilling or unable to adopt, please kindly talk with them about the importance of doing their research before they buy.

Share our nonprofit with them and let them know that we are here to help them avoid falling for a puppy mill, a predatory loan, or an outright scam where the puppy doesn't even exist.

Talking about buying puppies isn't a comfortable conversation for so many of us, but that is why Bailing Out Benji is here to help and we will do it with kindness and compassion. We want to stop people before they support an inhumane facility but we need your help reaching them!

We’re thrilled to join Big Paws of The Ozarks and other NWA shelters and rescues TOMORROW to put a spotlight on why you should always consider adoption first! Bailing Out Benji will be there with information about commercial breeding, where pet store puppies come from (including Citipups), and how you can get involved. I’ll bring extra protest signs, but feel free to make your own. Arkansas, we have a puppy mill problem, and the solution starts with you.

There’s a new pet store in town — this time in the heart of Downtown Bentonville. But while the location is new, the story is the same. They claim to work with “reputable breeders” and call it “adoption” while selling $3,000 puppies sourced from large-scale, unethical breeding operations. At the end of the day, it’s all about profit- not the animals.

Join us and take a stand, this Saturday, May 17th from 10:30–12:30 on SW A Street as we promote adoption and speak out against this system that repeatedly profits off the suffering of companion animals.

7 of our local rescues + shelters will be popping up throughout the neighborhood with adoptable dogs, good vibes, and a clear message: Northwest Arkansas supports ethical breeders and adoption — not puppy mills.

Due to the lack of state regulation, Arkansas is a hotbed for puppymills and the stores that profit from them. Citipups is opening a store in Bentonville after New York banned stores that sell puppies. Please educate your friends and family about the cruel conditions of high-volume commercial breeders. We all love puppies, so we understand that temptation sometimes gets the best of us. If you purchased a sick puppy, it can put a damper on holiday cheer- and your wallet. While we hope ALL puppies are healthy and happy, puppy mills often skimp on veterinary care, leaving YOU with a sick puppy. Please reach out to us if you purchased a sick puppy at the link below.

No one wants to spend their holiday break at the vet clinic with an emergency case of parvo, Giardia or worse.

If you are getting a new puppy- or pet in general- make sure that you are thoroughly researching before you send the business any money. We are regularly hearing from customers who have to spend thousands at the vet clinic due to contagious illnesses, after having spent an equal amount on their puppy to begin with.

If you know someone who has purchased a puppy that later became sick, have them reach out to us and we can help them file all of the right complaints!

Dick and Jane are buying puppies for Christmas. Jane has researched her puppy’s breed thoroughly, knows the care requirements, found an ethical breeder through the national breed club, made sure the parents were fully health tested, and got on a waiting list for her puppy.
Dick walked into a pet store and bought a cute puppy on a whim. He did not do any research, took out a loan for his puppy purchase and inadvertently supported a puppy mill.
This Christmas, don’t be a Dick.

Unfortunately, registration papers don’t guarantee you’re buying from a reputable breeder. Registries like the AKC or APR are not inspection or enforcement agencies—they’re there to collect money from registrations of purebred and mixed-breed puppies.

It’s much more important to start by asking breeders two key questions:

1. Have the parent dogs been genetically tested for health issues common to their breed?

2. What is the rehoming plan for the parent dogs?
