Pet stores don’t admit to using puppy mills- it’s bad for business!

No. We aren’t exaggerating. Puppy selling stores use lending companies like EasyPay , WAGS lending and Lending USA which charge upwards of 200% interest per lease or loan in order to buy an already overpriced puppy.

It gets worse. In states where there are no legal protections, your puppy can actually be repossessed upon missed payment. And you are still on the hook for the loan or lease even if your puppy gets sick or dies.

Puppy mills and puppy stores are profiting off of cute names and squishy puppies, while banking on the fact that the public won’t research before they buy.

For the love of dog, don’t buy a puppy without seeing where and how the parents live and always google the breeder. You should always avoid buying a puppy in a store as well. Giving money to puppy-selling stores, only keeps puppy mills in business. Or better yet, look for your next best friend at your local shelter or rescue!

We get this question *a lot* because of our research on the industry, our puppy mill maps, as well as the annual HSUS Horrible Hundred list.

Even the worst facilities are often licensed and inspected by the Department of Ag, just look at this year’s Horrible Hundred list. There were so many repeat offenders and atrocious violations but everyone is still licensed without repercussion. Last year alone we filed over 100 complaints on unlicensed facilities, resulting in one of them being named on the HH List this year due to operating without a license, while housing hundreds of dogs. But that’s it. These places quietly get a license after complaints and are free to do business.

But what does it take to shut down a puppy mill? On episode 29 of “Truth, Lies and Puppy Mills” we sit down with Shalimar Oliver, the animal crimes manager with the HSUS, and discuss what it takes to actually shut down a puppy mill and save the animals. What is a "Puppy Mill"?

Far too often our opposition (pet stores and puppy mills) claim there is no legal definition of the term 'puppy mill' or that it refers to unlicensed, unregulated facilities. They also tell policy makers on the local and state level that they would *never* buy from puppy mills and that they only source from USDA facilities... While conveniently leaving out that the USDA gives licenses to some of the largest and worst puppy mills in the country.

However, there truly is a legal definition of the term 'Puppy Mill'. The 1984 court case Avenson v. Zegart gave us the definition through their ruling and organizations all over the world still use variations of this language today.
