🦅 Everyone, meet Artemis! 🦅

Artemis is a passage (first-year) Red-tailed Hawk, and she will be my partner for this year’s falconry season!

This season will be a huge learning experience for both of us. We’ll be learning to hunt together while building the trust and partnership that makes falconry so special. She’ll learn to trust me as her falconer and to use me as a tool to help her successfully pursue and catch prey.

At the end of the season, Artemis will remain with me through her molt. Once she has completed her molt and the time is right, she’ll be released back into the wild to continue her life where she belongs.

My hope is that she’ll go on to live a long, healthy life and hopefully contribute to the next generation of beautiful Red-tailed Hawks.

This is only the beginning of our journey, and I’m incredibly excited to see what this season has in store for us. 🦅❤️

A little sneak peek into how my weekend went! 🦅

As some of you know, this is my first year as a falconer’s apprentice, and it has been an incredible journey so far. There has been SO much learning, researching, studying, and preparing which I absolutely love but this weekend I finally got to put everything I’ve been learning into practice.

With the help of my sponsors, we had an incredibly successful trapping day and caught 3 juvenile Red-tailed Hawks in one day!

I walked away with a big ol’ girl of my own, weighing in at roughly 1,210 grams. Now the real journey begins building trust, learning each other, and eventually learning to hunt together.

I couldn’t be more excited to see where this journey takes us.

🐍 HUGE shoutout to Canyon Farmers Market ! 🐍

Thank you so much for having us out today as the main activity! We absolutely loved the environment, the atmosphere, and how easy and welcoming everything was. It was such a fun day! ❤️

🐍🦎 A little behind-the-scenes look at feeding day at the sanctuary! 😅

With snakes, lizards, and other animals that eat whole prey, we go through A LOT of feeders. Keeping everyone fed means sourcing frozen rodents in pretty large quantities, so here’s just a glimpse at what one of our stock orders can look like! 😂

🐍🇵🇷 A VERY SPECIAL NEW ADDITION TO FEATHER & FANG! 🇵🇷🐍

We are incredibly excited to officially introduce our new pair of Puerto Rican Boas (Chilabothrus inornatus)! ❤️🐍

The Puerto Rican Boa is an incredible, nonvenomous species endemic to Puerto Rico and one of the island’s most fascinating native reptiles. These boas are nocturnal, semi-arboreal predators that play an important role in Puerto Rico’s ecosystem.

What makes this species especially significant from a conservation standpoint is its history. The Puerto Rican Boa was originally listed as Endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 1970 following major population declines and habitat loss. Decades of habitat protection, conservation work, research, translocation efforts, and public education helped the species recover to the point that the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service proposed removing it from the federal endangered species list.

The species also has a significant history under CITES, where Chilabothrus inornatus has been listed in Appendix I, providing international trade protections.

That history is exactly why we’re so excited to have this pair at Feather & Fang Animal Sanctuary.

These animals aren’t simply additions to our collection — they are an opportunity to educate the public about conservation success, responsible animal stewardship, international wildlife protections, and the importance of protecting biodiversity. 🌎🌿

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to care for these amazing animals and hopefully introduce them to the community as future ambassadors for their species.

Y’all come check us out this Friday and Saturday at Gee Farms! We’re doing a collaboration booth with Ready Set Rescue, so come see our animals and meet over a dozen interactive ambassador species. From a tiny 5-inch hognose snake all the way up to a massive 16-foot reticulated python, there will be plenty of amazing animals to see and learn about.

We’ll also have merchandise available, so be sure to stop by and say hello!

This is going to be an incredible event featuring dozens of vendors, delicious food trucks, live music, and both nights will end with an exciting fireworks show. We can’t wait to see everyone there!
