Meet Brenda Zepeda Aguilar, the 2026 Russ Duncan Memorial Scholarship recipient.
Brenda's story starts in September 2022, the beginning of her freshman year. New school, new friends, and an exciting, fresh start. Until one day, after soccer practice, her mother, Maricela, told Brenda and her siblings that she had breast cancer.
From that day forward, Brenda watched her mother fight. She watched her sit in a chair draped in a towel, smiling through tears as her hair fell away. She watched her pray before chemotherapy treatments, light streaming through the windows. She watched a woman who came from hardship refuse to let cancer take her light.
And through all of it, Brenda kept going. She kept her grades up, showed up to soccer practice, and fought silent battles so her parents wouldn't have to carry one more thing. Soccer became her therapy. Her mother watched every single game. When she was too weak to attend in person, she watched through a screen. Brenda always knew she was there.
Her mother beat cancer. And then, a year later, Brenda's father, Leonardo, passed away suddenly. The family had just set down one heavy weight and picked up another. Her junior year was a daily battle, but she showed up anyway. For her dad. For her mom. For herself.
Last week, Brenda graduated from Palo Duro High School. She plans to attend Amarillo College to pursue engineering, following in her father's footsteps, and hopes to transfer to Oklahoma State or Texas Tech in the future. Brenda’s teacher and soccer coach, Shaun Massie, says it best: "Brenda’s experience has shaped her into a compassionate, driven, and goal-oriented young woman. Brenda embodies the perseverance and strength this scholarship seeks to honor."
We couldn't agree more. We are so proud to award Brenda the 2026 Russ Duncan Memorial Scholarship, and we can't wait to watch everything she does next.
Brenda, this community is SO proud of you and all the hard work you’ve put in. We believe in you!
