Sometimes, the animal isn’t the only one who needs saving.

One thing that makes our rescue a little different is that we don't just rescue animals—we care deeply about the humans behind them, too.

Over the years, I've learned that most people surrendering a beloved pet are not bad people. More often than not, they are facing impossible circumstances: illness, homelessness, domestic violence, financial hardship, aging, or personal crises that leave them with heartbreaking choices.

The emotional side of rescue matters.

When someone trusts us with an animal they love, our compassion doesn't stop with the pet. We believe the person deserves kindness, dignity, and support as well. That is why we maintain an open-door policy whenever possible. People who have made responsible, loving decisions for their animals are always welcome to visit them at the sanctuary. Sometimes a visit brings comfort. Sometimes it brings hope.

And sometimes, when life improves and it is truly in the animal's best interest, our goal is reunification.

Rescue should not be about shame. It should not be about making people feel guilty for asking for help. It should be about creating solutions, preserving bonds when possible, and recognizing that both ends of the leash matter.

It takes a village to help animals, and that village must include the people who love them.

At The Last Resort Animal Sanctuary, we believe compassion belongs to everyone who walks through our gates—two-legged and four-legged alike.
