The cold winter weather has arrived. Utah's homeless population has increased in the face of economic hardship and inflation. Unfortunately we are seeing more individuals sleeping on the street, in stairwells, underpasses, and culverts.

WE have decided to forego our traditional December service project and this year collect emergency sleeping bags to distribute to our homeless population.

Emergency sleeping bags are light, water/wind proof, and take-up minimal space when not in use. The sleeping bags will go a long way to keeping those on the streets dry and warm.

If you or your company would like to make a donation please reach out.

The new staff bunkhouse has been completed and dedicated just in time for our final DV survivor camp of the season. We almost gave up on this bunkhouse and turned it into a tack room!! Scheduled to be completed in June, we are extremely grateful for all the code and inspection hoops our resident host family jumped through to make this happen. We now have beds for 30 campers and 12 staff members!!

Our original goal for occupancy has been met and now we can focus on adding additional programs for our campers. We are looking forward to summer 2023.

SOCKS FOR SEPTEMBER!

For people experiencing homelessness in our communities, a pair of clean, dry socks is so much more than just an item of clothing.

** Shelters go through socks very quickly, as they are one of the most sought-after items by the men, women, children, and infants who utilize their facilities.

Here’s why socks are the Most-Requested Item in Homeless Shelters:

1) The average person living on the street walks a lot.

Between walking to medical appointments, work opportunities and government agencies, not to mention searching for food banks and shower facilities, the average homeless person logs a lot of miles on foot. That can add up to many pairs of worn-through socks and shoes.

2) Keeping feet dry and warm on the street is a huge challenge.

Keeping your feet warm and dry is difficult when you spend your days outside, especially in extreme heat, cold or rain. Most shelters close during daytime hours, leaving homeless people very few places to get away from the elements.

3) Clean, dry socks = healthy feet.

Clean, dry socks are the best way to prevent skin infections, nail diseases, frostbite and trench foot. These problems are a painful ordeal for anyone, but they are especially crippling when you don’t have a home where you can rest and recuperate. A painful foot infection makes it very difficult to get to all of those important, life-changing appointments like job interviews and housing intake meetings.

Healthy feet are the ticket to mobility. Healthy feet are a part of human dignity.

** During the month of September WE will be collecting and distributing NEW socks to area homeless/teen shelters. WE hope this will help our community partners be better stocked and prepared for the oncoming cold season and to mitigate the impact of the current migrant crisis on our local resources.

I am happy to pick up donations OR you may order socks online from Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc., and have them delivered to my address. If you would like the mailing address please PM me.

** WE ARE NOT TAKING CASH DONATIONS THIS YEAR - ALTHOUGH VERY MUCH APPRECIATED THE SHOPPING WAS OVERWHELMING - We purchased over 5,000 pairs of socks last year!🧦

Meet our new therapy horses!! They've been in Quarantine for the past month but finally arrived at the ranch in Wyoming on Tuesday.

They'll have a couple of weeks to settle in and interact with Hector, Miles, and Greta before beginning their training. We're so excited for them to be apart of our 2022 summer program. 💜

WE is always so humbled and appreciative of the companies and individuals that donate to our therapeutic equine program, without them this program would not exist.

WE is also excited to add a 3rd camp session this year for young women "aging out" of foster care. ** Keep an eye out for opportunities to sponsor a young woman and support them through this difficult transition. 💜

As the holidays have come to a close and the coldest nights of the year lay ahead We for WE is busy assembling 1000 "warmth" kits.

In honor of our annual February WARM HEARTS, WARM HANDS community event we express our gratitude to Black Rifle Coffee Co, Krispy Creme Donuts, Emergency Essentials, The Keller Foundation, the Murphy Family Foundation, and the many, many individuals and families that have made donations to support this event.

** DUE TO OMNICRON THIS EVENT WILL NOT INCLUDE OUR USUAL CHILI AND CORNBREAD DINNER STAFFED BY VOLUNTEERS. However volunteers are still encouraged to assemble "warmth" kits.

We are also super excited to be rolling out our "Cruising for a Cause" Community Outreach Van for the first time as we serve the unsheltered members of our community during this event!!

As we make resolutions and plan for the future, let us consider adding resources and tools to our list. The more knowledge we possess, the more support and empathy we can offer to those we interact with.

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) of Utah offers resources to individuals and families of those struggling with mental health issues. Su***de Prevention Training is an excellent way to support the one's we love.

QPR: SU***DE PREVENTION TRAINING

According to the Surgeon General’s National Strategy for Su***de Prevention (2001), a gatekeeper is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating su***de.

Gatekeepers can be anyone, but include parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, ministers, doctors, nurses, office supervisors, squad leaders, foremen, police officers, advisors, caseworkers, firefighters, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of su***de.

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — 3 simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from su***de. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a su***de crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help.

QPR is a 60-90 minute training. Free workshops run on the 4th Thursday of each month, from 12 pm - 1:30 pm.

As we have pondered the current climate and our role in the community we have concluded that our future programs will be centered around acces and inclusion.

With this in mind more online programs will be offered in 2022. We will realign many of our community health and service programs to offer greater access.

We will still offer many in-person classes and events throughout Salt Lake and Utah Counties. We also plan to continue our equine summer camps in Wyoming and our local retreats.

In addition, we will be focusing on education in 2022 and sponsoring more GED certificate courses, work internships/apprenticeships, ESL courses, and job preparedness certificate courses.

We are busy implementing these new changes and are excited for the changes 2022 will bring to WE Utah Chapter.

We for WE is undergoing some exciting changes!

Please be patient as we work to find new ways to offer programs and serve the public amid the pandemic.

Our goal is to find new, innovative ways to continue our commitment in educating and empowering the unsheltered and vulnerable women in our community.

We will be back soon. ❤
