Horses! What a wonderful addition to our lives. And oh the lessons they bring, OK....some good and some bad, but what a ride.

I DID NOT KNOW...

I did not know a horse could bring people into your life that end up meaning the most to you.
I did not know a horse could make the hardest days of your life bearable.
I did not know a horse could teach you to put others first.
I did not know a horse could remind you time and time again that your gut is always right.
I did not know a horse could break your heart.
I did not know a horse could pick you up when you have fallen apart.
I did not know a horse could teach you to dream again, after you thought it was not possible.
I did not know a horse could make you believe in yourself.
I did not know a horse could teach responsibility, work ethic, and dedication.
I did not know a horse could make you believe in something when no one else does.
I did not know a horse could make you learn to forgive and forget.
I did not know a horse could humble you faster than you can say humble.
I did not know a horse could make you a winner.
I did not know a horse could also teach you how to lose gracefully.
I did not know a horse could instill patience in you.
I did not know a horse could make you listen better.
I did not know a horse could give you their heart.
I did not know a horse could change your life.
I did not know a horse could do all these things...
but now I know.

It helps make darn good overall adults, also.

Since we're in the thick of county fair season...

The animal isn't the only project. The kid putting in countless hours of feeding, training, washing, and overall caring for the animal is also the project.

4-H isn't just for farm kids either. It reaches across communities rural, suburban, and urban- and even countries- and teaches youth the value of learning by doing, and serving your community and world 🌎

I'm a proud 4H alum 🍀

The raffle has stalled out. Let's look at what you may receive if you win. I'm not sure what Val charges for a cinch but I bet it's a couple of hundred. Ashley's cinch/breast collar combos start at $375. Then you have the $25 gift cards that go with them. Either way that's a pretty good prize if you win.
Let's look at the odds. If you buy 1 spot your chances of winning are 1 in 15. If you buy 3 spots your chances of winning are 1 in 5. That's really good odds for a raffle like this.
Please support a worthwhile program and buy a spot or 3. The prizes will be on display at the Jefferson County Fair horse show.

Here is an overview of the history and purpose of Alpine 4-H Horse Camp.
Horse camp was created in 1972 by Ed Duren, Steve Peebles, and Rex Gooch. For the first 10 or so years it was held down at Indian Creek and the youth were bussed from the cabins at Alpine to Indian Creek. In the early 80's arrangements were made to have it held where it is today. The original arenas were built by a reserve unit of Sea bees. The arenas have just now been replaced last year and this year. Horse Camp has survived lawsuits and pandemics. There's been years where it rained all 3 days and years it's been so hot that horses and students had to have medical attention. It has adapted to changing social environments requiring additional safety measures to be able to keep running. Horse Camp has and will adapt to whatever comes down the road.
Horse Camp is a 3 day camp that helps 4-H youth to learn more about their horse. It was also designed to help 4-H ers get ready for county fair. Classes cover anything from Western and ba****ck equitation to working ranch classes. There are many classes that don't require a horse such as macrame and saddle care. This camp caters to all levels of riding ability. If you don't feel like riding there's even driving classes. All classes are taught by volunteers with extensive knowledge of what they are teaching. The Alpine 4-H Horse Camp Committee is also voluntary.
We are now seeing second and third generations attending camp. Life long skills and friendships are made at horse camp. For many it is a favorite memory of our childhood.
Over the years the costs of operating and sustaining this camp has increased dramatically. The cost to attend has had to rise to cover these additional costs over the years. We understand that not all 4-H families can afford to send their children to this wonderful camp. That is why the Alpine 4-H Horse Camp Scholarship Fund is sooooo important. It allows 4-H kids the opportunity to attend camp they otherwise couldn't afford. This scholarship fund is replenished by donations, raffles, tack sales, and other fund raising activities.
Right now there is a raffle going on for some mohair cinches and breast collar made and donated by local artists. We encourage everyone to check out the raffle and support this excellent and, I dare say, one of a kind camp.
